Yesterday, April 15, JBAS - Japanese Business Alliance in Serbia members attended the conference "One Region, One Market; A step towards the EU common market" organized by the Center for Regional Economic Research and Analysis in Novi Sad. The conference was attended by Ministers of the Government of Serbia, Mr. Tomislav Momirović, Ms. Darija Kisić and Mr. Slobodan Cvetkovicć, Mr. Nenad Ivanišević, the provincial secretary for economy and tourism, Mr. Dragoslav Šćekić, the Vice President of the Government of Montenegro, Mr. Staša Košarac, the Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as distinguished representatives of the business community. On behalf of the organizers, State Secretary Mr. Aleksandar Simurdić pointed out that plans for potential cooperation in the area of the Western Balkans will be further discussed, taking a step closer towards the common market of the European Union. The Hungarian presidency will be a transition presidency. There will be little legislative activity. But a Council presidency is always important. We all know that Hungary is a difficult EU member and that there are many areas where Budapest takes positions that are not in the mainstream. The question is whether the government will use the Presidency to highlight the divisions or whether it will play the traditional role of the honest broker. My guess and my hope is they will do the latter and use the post election time to work towards more unity, mutual understanding and cooperation. I know from my work with the HU presidency in 2011 that they have a very good administration and that they can do a good job if the political will is there to do just that.
