Today, we are shining the spotlight on the renowned mathematician Gladys West. Her work was pivotal in developing the Global Positioning System (GPS) that has become an integral part of our daily lives. Born in 1930, Gladys overcame numerous obstacles to pursue her education, eventually earning the first full scholarship to attend Virginia State College. The U.S. Naval Proving Ground hired Glady in 1956, where her extraordinary skills in mathematics led to the development of satellite models essential for GPS technology. At 70 years old, she enrolled back into Virginia Tech and earned a doctorate in philosophy. This month, we honor her legacy as a pioneer who revolutionized technology and paved the way for future generations of African Americans in STEM. #BlackHistoryMonth, #STEMDiversity, #WomenInSTEM
