North Carolina hospitals are open and serving patients, but they are struggling in the wake of Helene's devastation. Some hospitals in western North Carolina were without running water for days. Federal officials have sent teams to assist hospitals, setting up tents to help overwhelmed emergency departments. About 300 HCA Healthcare nurses have arrived to support the staff at Mission Hospital in Asheville.

As I reflect on the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and my deployment to establish and staff a medical shelter, two key insights continue to resonate loudly: 1. Nurses are uniquely prepared to respond to disasters. Our scope, training, and daily work includes therapeutic communication, empathy and connection, assessment, triage and prioritization, resource utlization, care and discharge planning, compassionate holistic care- all of it- translates directly to disaster response and recovery. 2. Nursing curriculum at every level MUST include this vital content. Disaster of some kind will impact EVERY nurse- it is unfortunately only going to be more frequent and widespread going forward.

Helping the world understand wildfire resilience, prevention, and mitigation || Wildfire chemicals || Wildfire prevention technologies || Aerial firefighting & fleet development
As a former firefighter and EMT, I've witnessed firsthand the vital role of emergency care. It's where life-saving interventions begin, often making the difference between life and death. Yet, we're facing a critical shortage of these essential frontline providers. Here's why this matters: 1. These providers are the face of emergency services in our neighborhoods. 2. EMTs and firefighters are often the first on scene, providing crucial immediate care. 3. Pre-hospital care connects patients to definitive medical treatment, improving outcomes. The shortage of pre-hospital providers is alarming, stemming from several factors: 1. The psychological stress of emergency work often goes unaddressed. 2. Rigorous training requirements can be a barrier for potential recruits. 3. Many pre-hospital providers are underpaid for their critical work. To address this crisis, we must: 1. Develop accessible, high-quality training programs to attract and retain providers. 2. Advocate for fair pay that reflects the importance of this life-saving work. 3. Implement robust support systems for emergency responders. As a community, we must value and support our pre-hospital emergency care providers. They're not just first responders; they're our first line of defense in a medical crisis. What solutions do you see? How can we attract more people to this crucial field?
