This segment opens a door to a much larger conversation on the language used in our own healing journey. I have long preferred “living experience” to “lived experience” when describing my own recovery process because it’s ongoing. I am living my life today in the present tense, not the past. Sure, there’s a lot I’d like to leave in the rear view, with problematic use of opioids being the most significant. Yet I also have to examine some of those past experiences (trauma, relationship patterns, bad decisions) in order to fully put them behind me. So, living my life indicates progress, both behind me and on the road ahead. Another term I’m reconsidering is “active addiction” for similar reasons. Many in my circles consider this disease to be lurking just around the corner and ready to snatch away all we have gained in recovery. But if that’s true, isn’t “the disease” always active? Allegedly doing jumping jacks just on the other side of a flimsy imaginary door? Even the term “recovery” is open to examination, as is “addiction” and the idea that we have a “disease” that is chronic and recurring. This video clip is great because it not only nails down much of what irked me about Jelly Roll’s testimony before Congress, but also because of how lived vs. living experiences are defined. Though largely subjective, recovery language is important and how we frame our experiences is impactful. The words we use help frame not only how the world views us but how we view ourselves. Friends and colleagues, I’m curious… How do you describe yourself? How do you share your own journey, your process of change? And how has this changed for you as you travel through life and take different routes to healing? Share below or reach out any time!
Integrating those with living experience "can be really dangerous for folks to share... [because] those consequences can involve job loss, involvement with child protective services and further criminalization" Proud to represent the Boston Medical Center (BMC) at this National Academy of Medicine / National Academy of Sciences / Office of National Drug Control Policy event Full conference can be found here: https://lnkd.in/ekbkbidc

One of my favorite questions Joe McClung asks our MedTech leaders is, "Who is your favorite superhero?" 🦸♂️ It's fascinating to see how the tales of courage and resilience draw parallels in real life, especially in our field. In this new video from More Health, you'll see that ordinary people can be heroes too, shaping futures and saving lives. Unintentional injury is a silent crisis. In the U.S., it's the top cause of death among children and adolescents aged 1-17 years. Tragically, unsecured firearms are a significant contributor. These preventable incidents highlight the urgent need for better safety measures and community awareness. Take some time this week to watch the video with an important child in your life and talk to them about how they can be a hero. Let's work together to ensure every child's safety and build a healthier tomorrow. #MedTech #ChildSafety #HealthcareHeroes #Firearmsafety FloodGate Medical

So excited to see this! The newest edition (2024) of the NIJ’s Death Investigation Guidelines is now available online. The last time this was updated was 2011 so it’s great to have such current guidelines available. This is an invaluable tool for any death investigator, medical examiner, coroner, and/or for citizens alike who may wonder how a death investigation should actually be conducted. https://lnkd.in/eQ3vCpRy
