There are only a few more hours left to donate to Give for Good Louisville to benefit the Norton Children's Hospital Foundation's Food Pantries. Many families in Louisville and Southern Indiana struggle to provide healthy meals for children. This is due to many factors, including cost, living in a "food dessert" - an area where it is difficult to find affordable fresh food - and being unable to travel to a grocery. Food insecurity has negative effects for a child's health and lifelong well-being. At Norton Children's, we understand the lifelong implications of child hunger as well as the barriers and challenges families face. There are currently 25 food pantries across Norton Children's locations that have served more than 11,164 individuals in 2023 to date. Pantries are stocked with items like low-sugar cereal, brown rice, whole wheat pasta, low sodium pasta sauce, tuna, peanut butter, canned fruit in natural juices, canned veggies and more. Today is a huge day for our family. Today is the day Murphy can start taking Trikafta. This little packet of medication represents so much for Murphy. This little packet represents hope. This little packet represents a chance at a full and healthy life. This little packet is a chance to avoid hours of airway treatments a day. This little packet is a chance to plan for college. This little packet is a chance to plan for a life after college. This little packet is a chance to have kids without worrying about being healthy enough to give birth. This little packet is a chance to watch those kids grow up and live life without spending weeks in the hospital to get IV antibiotics. This little packet is a chance to have a life expectancy that is in line with everyone else in the world. This little packet is something Madison Doyle and I have been thinking about since the day we found out about Murphy’s diagnosis. This little packet has been a miracle for those in the CF community that are eligible and tolerate it. This little packet is a chance, not a cure. This little packet isn’t available to the entire CF population. I can’t imagine what is running through the heads of those in the CF community who don’t have access to this little packet. This little packet isn’t tolerated by everyone who is eligible to take it. This little packet is a direct result of thousands of hours of research, millions of dollars in donations, countless hours of CF family members volunteering and fundraising, and thousands of patient trials. The median expected survival rate for those with CF when I was born in 1993 was less than 30 years old. This little packet has changed that to be 65 and that number keeps going up. Murphy is so incredibly lucky for the hard work and dedication of the CF community to make this little packet a reality. But we can’t stop now. Murphy will still need to take this little packet twice a day for the rest of her life. We fundraise with hopes of curing this disease. This community will do what it takes to make that a reality. Madison and I are so incredibly lucky for the support Murphy has received since she was born. Every dollar donated on Murphy’s behalf has gone to funding the next little packet. We will never be able to truly thank everyone who has donated but we are forever grateful for this support. In the event of an employee losing a child what do you do? The death of a child is something none of us want to prepare for, but it's important that when parents go through the worst imaginable they are offered every support available. I had a 1-1 meeting yesterday with my fellow networker (at 🤝🏼 SAM Networking and Marketing 🤝🏼) Kelly Dungworth who is a regional fundraiser for Forget Me Not Children's Hospice. I learnt that the hospice not only cares for sick children and provides end of life care for them and their families; but they also support families when children (from pregnancy to age 21) die suddenly. They can provide bereavement support and also a choice in where and how families say goodbye, through their resources like the 'snowflake room' which allow loved ones to spend extra time with the deceased. Kelly told me that unfortunately, often when they need it most, families just aren't aware of the support on offer. It made me think about how in such horrendous circumstances employers can be blindsided and unaware of how they can help their employees. I would highly recommend putting in place a policy on Parental Bereavement Leave and Pay for your organisation. There are statutory rights for both leave and pay, but you should set out those for employees to access, and consider whether you offer any enhanced entitlements as an employer. The period is 2 weeks, the rate of pay is at the statutory rate, and only employees with 26 weeks' service are eligible, but you might want to offer more to your employees. Also be aware of other options available to employees who are going through a trauma - for example sick leave - here it is a MUST that you set out your organisational entitlements to leave and pay. And think about what additional support you can offer: Do you have an employee assistance programme or health scheme through which employees can access counseling? Do you consider offering to pay for counseling for employees in extreme circumstances? How will you keep in contact with the bereaved parent and bring them back into the workplace when they are ready? How are their close colleagues coping? - seeing someone you care about going through the worst imaginable has to have an impact. But whether as an employer, friend, family member or whatever capacity you know someone in; being able to signpost bereaved parents to places like Forget Me Not might be the greatest comfort you can give them at that time. Emergency blood shortage as supply hits 20-year low, Red Cross says " supplies are their lowest levels in 20 years". Here's how the Red Cross is hoping to boost donations this month. January is National Blood Donor Month, but the Red Cross says it's seeing the lowest donation numbers in decades. Let's connect the dots. The American Red Cross says it's facing an emergency blood shortage, with blood supplies hitting their lowest levels in 20 years. Over the last two decades, blood donations to the Red Cross have fallen 40%. The shortage was at its peak over Christmas and New Year's Day with a shortfall of nearly 7,000 units. Blood shortages can have big impacts on life-saving medical procedures, causing dramatic effects for those who require blood transfusions. Blood is going out faster than donations are coming in, forcing many hospitals to limit Type O distributions to keep supply. To combat the shortage, the Red Cross has partnered with the NFL. Anyone who donates blood this month will be entered to win two Super Bowl tickets.

Updates on several fronts! Food insecurity initiative:  I just applied to three more grants: Principal Foundation Grant, Hunger to Health Collaboratory, and the Kathy J Pedersen grant. The first one is by invitation only, so we may find out soon. The later two will not have any results until September or so. Assuming none of them will come through, as many of these organizations do not understand how challenging it is for people living with ME and Long COVID are to prepare meals, or to afford food that are uncanned, unpreserved, gluten and/or dairy free, I plan to organize a national virtual bake sale in late October to early November hoping to raise funds helping some of you who are struggling without a voice. A silent auction is another possibility if needed. More to come. But this is it for grant application for me. Caregiver support group: One family member brought up to me today that he is interested to join an in-person support group for caring for a loved one with ME or Long COVID. At this time, I am looking for someone besides me to run this group once a month at a centralized location in the Twin Cities. Please post your ideas on this feed. If people in other locations are interested in starting one, please also say something here.
