There is a place where thousands of men, women, and children wear footwear that is not fit for purpose. And at least 280,000 homeless people (10,000 living on the streets) have no shoes or shoes that are falling to pieces, and that place is the UK. Shoe Aid is a national charity based here in the UK who source and supply free footwear through a collection and distribution network, so no child or adult need go without shoes. In September Shoe Aid will once again be launching STEPTEMBER. We want to raise awareness of the issue of footwear poverty and get people to focus on the challenges and impact it has. In September this year, there are four Tuesdays, each of these days we are asking people to organise events to raise awareness of footwear poverty, that’s four opportunities to take part, everyone can take part in one or all of the days, which we are calling SHOESDAYS. Rather than have a badge or ribbon or other icon we want to ask people to wear ODD SHOES for one or all the SHOESDAYS. They can also wear NO SHOES. Sharing images from these events/days across social media should help raise the issues of footwear poverty. People will not be limited to NO SHOES or ODD SHOES; we are looking for people to be creative too. We would like people to help headline the issues and challenges of footwear poverty here in the UK. Shoe Aid relies on footwear donations to deliver its service to those in need. We ensure all our footwear is ‘Fit for Purpose’ and donate new and used items ‘Free of Charge’. Whilst the service is ‘Free’ Shoe Aid is not free to operate. Poverty of any kind is not voluntary, part-time or weekends only, Shoe Aid has volunteers who help sort and clean donated footwear in readiness. However, to help more people and organisations – Shoe Aid needs to operate ‘Full Time’ to meet the needs and demands of men, women, children and families who don’t have suitable footwear and be part of everyday life. As well as shoe/footwear donations we are asking for monetary donations to support Shoe Aids work. This would be (voluntary) £3 from each person who wears ODD SHOES or NO SHOES or donates items or footwear. People and organisations could also have competitions, quizzes (footwear themed) to raise funds for Shoe Aid and footwear poverty. This week, a school mum asked me where I get my Levi's (men's 501s off Ebay + local tailoring) A friend asked me where I got my bag from (a charity shop, likely handed in by someone with strong holiday buyer's remorse) A work contact asked me where I got my jumper from (a brand offering sustainably produced staples) Truth be told, I've been shopping 90% vintage and second-hand since I was a teen (except staples, shoes and knickers). Any clothing compliments I get are on my preloved items. They're also my most loved clothes––some of them I've worn for over 20 years. I'm not telling you this because I think I'm ace btw. I'm telling you because, of all the networking I do, I'm genuinely shocked by how little people think about or discuss their personal and professional environmental impact and what they can do to lessen it. Buying preloved items is an obvious win-win. The items: 💚 Are unique, well crafted and of good quality 💚 Have the perfect lived-in patina chemicals can't reproduce 💚 Give you confidence you'll never turn up to a party wearing the same dress as someone else. 💚Worn eclectically, won't go out of style 💚Are often brand new and unused! 💚 Are usually a total bargain! (and let's face it, who doesn't love that) Any items you don't wear can be easily resold on platforms like eBay, Vinted and Depop. Often for a profit... £140 million worth of clothing (300,000 tonnes)goes to landfill each year in the UK 😱 Buying preloved is not a fix-all. Buying less is still better.
