At the age of 7, UPSer Ralf Nelissen had his first life-saving surgery. Born with a congenital heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot, his first surgery “opened doors to a life of normalcy” for Ralf. “But, at age 40, a new challenge emerged – a ventricle rhythm issue, led me to a second operation. And that’s when I got my first ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator). The device is about the size of a lighter and protects me if a ventricle heart rhythm problem occurs. “Now, I’m dependent on this pacemaker, so my heart rhythm remains steady. People say they have a guardian angel on their shoulder – but mine is implanted under my left shoulder.
