10 Largest Mutual Funds by AUM Many investors focus on total returns when comparing one fund against another. While it's good to know how much your money can grow, the size of the fund can also impact your total returns. Each fund incurs operating costs that factor into the expense ratio. This ratio reflects the annual cost of investing in the fund. For instance, if a mutual fund has a 1% expense ratio, you will have to pay $10 for every $1,000 you put into the fund. · According to Regulation 2(1)(b) of the SEBI (Mutual Funds) Regulations, 1996 ("Mutual Fund Regulations"), an exchange-traded fund (ETF) is a mutual fund scheme that invests in securities that mirror an index and is listed and traded on an exchange platform. · Regulation 18(a) of the SEBI (Alternative Investment Funds) Regulations, 2012 ("AIF Regulations") permits Category III Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs) to invest in securities of listed investee companies. Based on a combined reading of Regulation 2(1)(b) of the Mutual Fund Regulations and Regulation 18(a) of the AIF Regulations, it could be interpreted that Category III AIFs might be allowed to invest in the units of ETFs, as these units are listed and traded on recognized stock exchanges. · However, Regulation 15(1)(f) of the AIF Regulations specifically allows Category III AIFs to invest the un-invested portion of their investable funds and divestment proceeds in liquid mutual funds temporarily, until the funds are deployed according to the investment objectives or distributed to investors as per the terms of the fund documents. SEBI, through an informal guidance note, clarified that while Regulation 15(1)(f) allows temporary investments in liquid mutual funds, including ETFs, it does not permit Category III AIFs to adopt an active strategy of regularly investing in ETFs to generate income. SEBI's view is that Category III AIFs cannot include investments in mutual fund schemes, including ETFs, as part of their core investment strategy, except as a temporary measure for managing un-deployed funds. ETFs are listed and traded on exchanges the AIF Regulations do not permit Category III AIFs to engage in the regular trading of ETF units as a means of generating income. Such investments are only allowed on a temporary basis under Regulation 15(1)(f), to manage un-invested funds until they are deployed according to the fund’s investment objectives. #SEBI #informalguide #AIFs #AssetManagement #Funds
