Did Adidas lose the German Football team's shirt deal because of a rapper? Kanye West's controversial remarks led Adidas to cut ties, impacting their revenues, especially with Yeezy shoes off the market. The German football team's poor performance also harmed the German Football Federation (DFB) financially. When the DFB opened bids for kits, Nike seized the opportunity and offered twice the amount that Adidas did. The result? The DFB terminated an almost 80-year-old relationship with Adidas in favor of a new 8-year deal with Nike. The move received heavy criticism in Germany, with some even calling it unpatriotic. What's your take? Did the DFB make the right call? #Adidas #Nike #GermanFootball #DFB #KanyeWest #Yeezy #Sponsorship #SportsBiz #FootballKit #NikevsAdidas #Sports #SportsMarketing #Branding #Sportswear #Marketing

How Puma is taking on Nike and Adidas at Copa America? To many, the German firm Puma was seen as a baby brother. This is reflected in overall sales, with Puma recording $2.1billion (£1.66bn at current rates) in revenue in the first quarter of 2024, compared to $5.46bn for Adidas and $12.43bn for Nike. As such, Puma is indisputably a challenger brand. Adidas has long had its tentacles wrapped around major FIFA tournaments, such as the World Cup, and UEFA’s prized assets- the European Championship and Champions League. But this summer’s Copa America is the first since 2004 not to have Nike as a sponsor of the tournament and the match ball. Instead, Puma has taken ownership, as part of a bigger deal including all of the South American football federation CONMEBOL’s country and club competitions. Yet Puma only sponsors one national team competing at the Copa America: Paraguay. Adidas sponsors eight (most notably Argentina and Mexico), Nike sponsors four (including the USA and Brazil), Marathon sponsors two, and Reebok sponsors one. It follows a pattern Puma has adopted in different markets, notably taking over sponsorship of the English Premier League ball from the 2024-25 season after a long period of Nike dominance, but sponsoring only one club in Manchester City. Puma also sponsors the ball in La Liga but does not sponsor any of Spain’s biggest hitters. NYT story by Adam Crafton, link below.

German Football Association (DFB): ❌ Adidas -> ✅ Nike (Hopes for Patriotism?) The German Football Association (DFB) has inked an eight-year deal with Nike as their official kit supplier, starting from 2027. The wild thing about this news? Adidas has been a DFB partner since the 1950s! The deal indicates a whopping €100 million per year bid from Nike, reportedly nearly double what Adidas offered. The decision is a surprise to the football and sponsorship world. No one expected Adidas to lose the bid. The German economy minister Robert Habeck said he “would have hoped for more patriotism.” I'm a German. How do I feel about it? When we talk business, the best offer wins. Nike's offering double the money. Congrats on winning the bid, Nike! I don't know all the ins and outs of this partnership and proposals. But a decades-long partnership against the canvas of patriotism carries its challenges. A reminder for brands and rightsholders: 1) Always re-innovate. 2) Make your offer stand out. 3) Never take a deal for granted. 4) Don't rely on patriotism when pitching. Nike won the bid, but let's remember that. German football is one of the most recognised in the world. Adidas is one of the most recognised German brands in the world. How did they come this far? Together. Pushbacks can be great lessons and often force you to challenge the status quo. Let's remember the Adidas slogan: "𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐈𝐬 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠" Everyone loves comeback stories, especially in sports. I hope to see German teams wearing Adidas (again)! P.S. Is it the right move for DFB and Nike, or should there be more room for patriotism in such decisions? Thoughts? #SportsMarketing #Nike #DFB #adidas #sportsbusiness #football

How did Nike break Adidas’ dominance in European football? Football is a team-sport, right? Yes it is, but a team is a bunch of individuals who play together to form a team and in the 21st century football is not just a sport - it is also entertainment! In 2004, Adidas “owned” all the great teams and competitions when it came to football kits and boots; Bayern Münich, Real Madrid, UEFA Champions League and FIFA World Cup to name a few. Nike had almost nothing in 2004, so they made a daring business plan built on the same pillars as the NBA basketball plan which they had succeeded with a few years earlier. Nike created “Joga Bonito” (Play Beautiful) and signed Ronaldinho. The first campaign was Ronaldinho hitting the crossbar 4 times in a row - which most people said was impossible. It became an instant hit on YouTube with 1 million views in 2005 (apparently the first viral hit on YouTube) and a new movement was started. Nike then signed more entertaining players; Henry with his elegance and Cristiano Ronaldo with his flair to name a couple. In 2006 Nike overtook Adidas in market share on football kits and boots in Europe, and passed the $1 trillion mark in revenue. All great, but the best thing was that a new generation grew up wanting to “play beautiful” like their Nike heroes, who were not only winning, but also entertaining the audience. In the Champions League season 2013-14, Nike sponsored 15 out of 32 teams, while Adidas sponsored 13 teams. The learning❓ To win in sports in the 21st century; don’t just sell the game, sell the DREAM!

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐑𝐎𝐖 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐬 - 𝐊𝐢𝐭 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬 👕 🌍 ⚽️ European football often takes the spotlight in kit deals, but let's shift our focus to across the globe. 🌏 Adidas dominates as the leading kit supplier in ROW markets with 53 deals, surpassing Puma and Nike. Remarkably, Adidas outspends Nike by $150 million, and even without its MLS deal, Adidas reinforce its position as the top spender. 🇺🇸 The longstanding centralised partnership between Adidas and MLS since 2005 creates equality and financial support for the majority of Major League Soccer teams. 🇦🇷 Argentina's domestic league boasts a competitive market with 19 unique brands in kit deals this season. 🇧🇷 Among all markets, Clube de Regatas do Flamengo's alliance with Adidas stands out as the most lucrative deal, showcasing the club's prominence in Brazilian football. 🇲🇽 In Mexico, only two new kit supplier deals have surfaced in the past year, marking the exit of Joma Sport and Under Armour from Liga MX. 🇦🇺 In Australia, Nike's continued absence in the @A-League and directing their focus to the national team, allows 11 other suppliers to cater to the competition. 🇸🇦 Notably, @Al Nassr's collaboration with Nike leads the charge in the SPL, generating nearly three times the revenue of Al Ahli in second place. Football ads are the best.
England. 1996. The ball falls for Paul Gascoigne to score a golden goal but he just can’t reach enough to tap it in. England painfully exits. A story that has unfortunately repeated itself since 1966. But you only lose when you lose hope. And England never do. This time, hope's name is Jude Bellingham. For fans, it’s just “Jude”. Our first work for adidas football demonstrates how adidas have always been there, and always will be, to support the dreams and help rally a nation. Hey Jude, you got this.
