Over the past three years, Get Islington Reading has reached 10,000 children and community members through 368 events and activities in schools, libraries, and the community. The project brought together national and local partners from The Reading Agency and Islington Council to authors and local libraries, all centred around a shared reading agenda.
This breadth of partners enabled us to use a multidimensional approach to transform young readers' experiences, with interventions in schools alongside summer holiday reading challenges, book gifting, and story trails in the community. We supported schools with a reading for pleasure budget and offered CPD for teachers to help with supporting pupils with the transition from primary to secondary school.
So what did we achieve? More children and young people...
✅ Enjoy reading
✅ Engage in positive reading behaviours like using their school or public library
✅ Think positively about reading
✅ Feel confident about reading
✅ Read for empowerment
The impact is clear: 100% of participating schools increased their focus on reading for enjoyment, while 68% of parents reported visiting libraries more frequently as a family. These successes, achieved amidst a backdrop of declining national literacy rates and enjoyment of reading, underscore the importance of collaborative community-driven literacy projects and create a model for others to adopt.
