Let's talk about stone lines, also known as stone bunds. These cost-effective, nature-based solutions are highly effective for reducing the speed of flowing water and promoting water infiltration. By doing so, they aid in the restoration of grazing lands and the broader ecosystem. The V-shaped stone linings you see help distribute water and reduce the pressure on the stones, preventing them from being washed away. In many rural communities in Zimbabwe, grazing lands are shrinking due to inadequate natural resource governance strategies. OLMOTI BOREHOLE PLANNING MEETING Last month, we hit the ground in Olmoti, the community benefiting from the Global Linkages Water Project. We met with community leaders, helped them plan to register members, and discussed the next steps that will bring water to their home. We establish COMMUNITY boreholes in Kenya. To do this, we first help communities create Self Help Groups (legal designations recognized by the Kajiado County government). The community leaders enroll members, collect registration fees, and send in their paperwork to be officially approved. They create bylaws that dictate when and how much each borehole member pays, how conflicts are resolved, how often meetings are held, etc. We've found that regularly collecting membership fees and water tariffs are critical to ensuring long-term sustainability at boreholes. Without money, the community doesn't have a fund for maintenance or further development. PEOPLE is what keep water systems online, and PEOPLE are worth investing in. This model is why 85% of our projects are still functioning and why funding partners, like Global Linkages, are eager to work with WILK. The Save Khandallah Pool team worked together over many weeks, to put together a detailed submission to the Council on why the pool deserves to be saved. We wanted our LTP Submission to capture the views, comments and feedback from all of you, as well as share some of the technical information that we think the Council has been missing in their decisions so far. Our submission covered: *who we are and who we represent *why we value the pool, and how it contributes to community health, wellbeing, and a sense of belonging *why the community deserves a chance to be heard *why demolition of the pool is not needed to address the flood and earthquake risks, and how this can save the Council and ratepayers major $$$ *why the pool will be even more useful in the future - with a warming climate and growing population. Most local individuals within Fako depends on streams and small rivers as their source of water for household use. But with the presence of water hyacinths in these water bodies, they're unable to access water from the water bodies as water hyacinths mats greatly depletes water quality. Conflict between herder and farmer groups is one of the key drivers of conflict in Ouham Pendé. However, given the right conditions, transhumance can facilitate peace and security throughout the region. Well-placed, working, and locally owned infrastructure can help to promote peaceful coexistence.     Settled, semi-settled, and transhumant communities benefit from socio-economic interactions, where trading takes place, oxen are rented for ploughing, and cattle are permitted to graze on stubble after harvest, whilst adding manure to croplands.     Our report amplifies local voices across Ouham Pendé, not only to highlight how decreasing accessibility to adequate infrastructure aggravates conflict associated with transhumance, but also to provide a platform for infrastructure to meet locally identified needs and provide favourable conditions for social cohesion. 🚨 To read the full report, please visit: https://lnkd.in/dxun43gR #peacebuilding #transhumance #conflictresolution

Bringing access to drinking water and flood prevention strategies to Basra’s informal settlements. Informal settlements in Basra are being upgraded as part of the European Union-funded project, “Increasing Access to Employment Opportunities for Vulnerable Urban Populations in Basra City in Response to the COVID-19 Crisis”. To meet the urgent need for access to clean and potable water, to address water scarcity and prevent flooding during the rainy seasons, three neighbourhoods in Basra City - Jurf Al Meleh, Al Kubiyah, and Al Ahrar - will benefit from the construction of stormwater and water networks. These initiatives will aid in transforming the water infrastructure for the neighbourhoods, positively impacting 16,000 of people. UN-Habitat's commitment to upgrading these informal settlements in Basra adopts an integrated approach.
