Microsoft, Google, Nucor Corporation: Large scale energy end-users looking for large scale, reliable, clean energy technologies. Nuclear is on the top of their list to evaluate. The RFI is out too!!: https://lnkd.in/daMSpqxd Go nuclear go, apply! Time has come to move beyond conceptual stage to actual projects. There cannot be a better opportunity, when the large scale end user is ready to buy clean power. #nuclearenergy #nuclear #nuclearpower https://lnkd.in/d3NJgdsZ

Great news. One of the big hurdles for new nuclear is financing, especially in anticipation of demand. A bold action as below is a huge step in making not just nuclear, but the promise of clean energy a viable option. With certainty of demand and concrete off-take agreements financing should be forthcoming. I applaud these companies and their leadership in this important step. https://lnkd.in/enkBnn7C

The realization is beginning to hit that soon, perhaps as early as 20 years from now, no one will be contracting for new nuclear power plants. The energy of the future will most likely be fusion. What will the nuclear workforce of tomorrow need to make that transition. Will the strong suit shift from engineering to physics? Will the risk-management skills we've learned in the fission business no longer be so critical in the fusion arena? Who is working on this?

There are two bottlenecks to rolling out Advanced Nuclear at scale, which we will need lots of, alongside renewables, to fully decarbonize the energy supply to the global economy. The first is a permitting bottleneck - it is laborious and expensive to gain permits to deploy nuclear around the world. We addressed this at length at #CERAWeek this week and believe we can significantly enhance the speed and scale of the industry's permitting operations with targeted use of specialist Generative AI. Congratulations and well done to Henning Kilset, Neeraj Joshi, Darryl Willis and the whole team at #CERAWeek and behind the scenes to light up the impactful technology on show. The second bottleneck is the deadlock between the capital required to build mass-manufacturing capacity for SMRs and the need for a book of orders for SMRs which the manufacturing capacity would crank out. The announcement below is intended to go some way to removing this bottleneck - creating up front demand for Advanced Nuclear and other 24/7 Carbon Free energy sources so together we can push the cost boulder up and over the top of the mountain so it can begin rolling down the other side - achieving a virtuous cycle of lower costs, which stimulate higher demand, which increases economy of scale, which lower costs.. and so on. Similar to Solar's cost trajectory over the last 15 years. Congratulations to Taylor Leyden, Adrian Anderson and the team who worked on this, and to Terra Praxis, P. Todd Noe and others who have championed this direction of travel. COP28 in Dubai has been called the 'Nuclear COP' - the year the world woke up to the need and opportunity of new nuclear to meet the world's increasing energy demand with firm, clean power. I'm happy to say the same was true for #CERAWeek this year. There was a strong focus on nuclear throughout. It is clear that significant momentum is building around Advanced Nuclear. Let's get the bottlenecks cleared and realize the opportunity it is presenting us all. https://lnkd.in/eaEK72jT

Yes, what Conor Kelly said for the private sector. We also need our government leaders & regulators to modernize in kind. Imagine when the nuclear regulatory licensure pipelines are highly automated, inclusive of GenAI capabilities with humans in the proper loops for accuracy, safety and review. #Microsoft has done amazing work to bootstrap one element of automation with the NRC. We need more of this! Come on public sector, we need you to be part of the solution here, this is how you scale and partner to meet global demand.

Grid connection for clean energy projects brought forward Electricity networks in England and Wales have enabled the grid connection offer dates of over 200 clean energy projects to be brought forward by up to as much as a decade. The move will see 7.8GW of clean energy projects, more than double the output of Hinkley Point C nuclear power station, have connection offer dates brought forward by up to 10 years through the Technical Limits programme. The scheme is allowing projects to connect to lower voltage distribution networks prior to reinforcement of the high voltage transmission network. Networks have so far sent offers to 203 projects totalling 7.8GW with an average connection acceleration of 6.5 years. In total, 393 projects are eligible for the programme with the further 190 projects able to receive accelerated offers once they have progressed through the connection offer process. Grid connections are being accelerated⚡️ The Energy Networks Association (ENA) and across industry are carrying out some great work to ensure customers can connect. We saw more connections being made from April 23 to March 24, than any other year! More data on connections can be found here: https://lnkd.in/edsd_PdU On our website, you can find more detail on the amazing work being carried out to reform connections through the oversight of the Connections Delivery Board. I also find it great how as an industry we are now using Hinkley point C as a new unit of measurement. #ConnectionsReform #GetConnected.

Battery storage becomes biggest source of supply in evening peak in California, the world’s fifth biggest economy and one of the world’s biggest grids. Pretty amazing that stationary storage overtook gas, hydro, nuclear and renewables as the biggest source of supply for a period of about two hours in the evening peak. About another 1.9 GW of battery storage capacity is in the process of commissioning, and the CEC estimates that the stage needs about 52 GW of battery storage to meet its 2045 goal of getting all of its power from carbon-free sources. The macro trend is unstoppable and critical metals will be essential to achieve the energy transition goals globally. #SouthStar #Graphite #Brazil #Alabama #CriticalMetals https://lnkd.in/ePsZVTga

As gas prices remain high and will likely continue to do so for the time being, nuclear energy could be making a comeback. In addition, more and more countries realize the lack of #renewableenergy storage when compared to increasing demand and are trying to work on battery availability. Lastly, clean or green hydrogen could be the way to go for #carbonreductionprograms. Learn more here ➡️ https://hubs.ly/Q02dnnhq0

Great to see this initiative. We need copious amounts of energy to power Industry 4.0. The energy sources, transmission schemes, and storage mechanisms have to be vastly greater than what we have today. Also, being at the mercy of fossil fuel supply chains, and the damage those things cause (environmentally and politically) isn't the answer.
