🎉No plans for the weekend yet??🎉 Check out our latest comprehensive review, essential read for all surgeons!👇👇👇 Major surgical conditions of childhood and their lifelong implications: comprehensive review ➡️https://lnkd.in/gJAZMsMf In recent decades, survival of children with congenital anomalies and paediatric cancer has improved dramatically such that there has been a steady shift towards understanding their lifelong health outcomes. Paediatric surgeons will actively manage such conditions in childhood and adolescence, however, adult surgeons must later care for these "grown-ups" in adulthood. This article aims to highlight some of those rare disorders encountered by paediatric surgeons requiring long-term follow-up, their management in childhood, and their survivorship impact, in order that the adult specialist may be better equipped with skills and knowledge to manage these patients into adulthood. A new prospective study of the use of The Karius Test, using mcfDNA detection by mNGS techniques. The study showed that plasma mcfDNA sequencing may be useful in culture-negative pediatric MSKIs if the sample is obtained prior to surgery. Overall, plasma mcfDNA sequencing also detected a pathogen for a longer duration compared with blood culture. https://lnkd.in/gQq3rpAX #diagnostics #mcfDNA #cfDNA #healthcareinnovation #pediatrics #infection #infectiousdisease #musculoskeletal

Case Study 149 - Retinoblastoma Retinoblastoma is an eye cancer that begins in the back of the eye (retina), most commonly in children. Retinoblastoma may occur in one or both eyes. It has few, if any, symptoms at first. It may be noticed if a pupil appears white when light is shined into the eye, sometimes with flash photography. Eyes may appear to be looking in different directions. Treatments include chemotherapy, radiation, surgery (enucleation of the eye), cryotherapy, or thermotherapy). Reconstruction of the proximal humerus in children who undergo bone tumor resection is challenging, and no consensus exists on the best method. For very young children with no other alternatives, Costantino Errani et al. suggest resurfaced allograft-prosthesis composites as a surgical option: Despite the high risk of complications, most children in their study retained their allografts, achieving good functional outcomes at the last follow-up interval.
