Not necessarily everyone's idea of a treat (I do this so you don't have to!), but today I took a day off to attend the Creative Bureaucracy/Bristol Ideas workshop at the Watershed Centre in Bristol. It was such an inspiring day, exploring how we might make public administrations function better, how we improve their 'inner life' so that officers and politicians can give their best, and how we can make these public organisations relate better to the outside world: opening up participation and decision-making to all who might want to get involved. Moving the answer from "no, because" to "yes, if", being braver, and rebuilding trust in councils and public servants. And with climate change as a stress multiplier, opening the doors wide to innovation and learning from each other so that we can adapt quickly and fairly across the world. Speakers from the UK and around the world shared their experiences of innovative ways of tackling public administration, including radical new: 💡roles - such as the Dutch Chief Heat Officers, reflecting the impact of climate change; the Night Mayor in Amsterdam; Wales's Future Generations Commissioner, a role which has had transformational impact in the Senedd 💡organisations - such as UAE's Ministry of Possibilities, Bologna's Civic Imagination Office, the EU's proposed Citizen's Assembly 💡programmes - the Swedish housing board which celebrates the learnings through failure with its Failure of the Year Award; ideas to bring to and retain talent in the public sector, such as Lithuania's tailored recruitment programme to tempt back those who have worked abroad; schemes from Brazil and Germany that enable sharing of successful innovation in public administration 💡processes - re-skilling councils in procurement, and weaning them off consultants; co-designing policies and processes with service users, in Manchester (homeless people and housing officers) Denmark (patients and clinicians) 💡networks & communities - such as the German Diplomats of Colour network There was masses more and I've come back with lots to think about, plus a notebook full of ideas to explore! Today's event was a spin off from the Creative Bureaucracy Festival that takes place in Berlin each year - you can read more about the Festival here https://lnkd.in/e6ydDJ5M

What #Europe does for me? 🤔 It isn't a provocative question 😄 than the name of a whole new area in the European Parliament website you can browse starting from here: https://lnkd.in/dckaNUPX ✅ What Europe does for me. "How does Europe affect our everyday lives? How does it impact on our jobs, our families, our health care, our hobbies, our journeys, our security, our consumer choices and our social rights? And how is Europe present in our towns, cities and regions? As European citizens, no matter where we live, how we make our living, or how we spend our time, the EU has an impact on our daily lives. This website presents a wide range of short, easy-to-read texts drawn up by the European Parliamentary Research Service, focusing on what the European Union does and the impact it has on us all, both in our everyday lives and in our local areas. It explores EU actions from the individual’s point of view, with many examples of projects and support. Read them yourself, but then please share and reuse these texts. And if you want a broader view, take a look at the section on EU policies in focus." 📺 I recorded the #clip embedded in the post just exploring some of the available sections: 3 Main categories, #InMyRegion, #InMyLife and #InMyFocus but also the option for a dive deeper for #Projects and with a #VisualMap. 💡It's a free service that everyone, both European citizens and non-citizens, can enjoy, offering 1,738 regions à la carte. Additionally, it provides some options for exporting or sharing contents but I believe they are not enough: a more structured way (e.g. like a notebook, plain text or excel report) would be appreciated for researchers or more advanced users. I was expected also a section related the Innovation or R&D... maybe can be added? However, Governments and Institutions offer many services online for free. Let's use them and provide our feedback to make them better and more "citizen-friendly" 😊. #ThinkTank #EuropeanParlament #Guide #Citizen #Information #PublicServices #CitizenFriendly #Community #Services #Innovation

I have benefitted from EU membership! As national coordinator for a European network of young directors, I lead dozens of video workshops with international associations and hundreds of youngsters. We travelled, exchanged and created like "once in a life". It will probably remain my best life period. When we began our livestreaming endeavors, we provided services in hotels and various European institutions, including European Commission, the World Health Organization and Federal Public Services (SPF). These experiences highlighted the power of communication networks to go ahead borders, to share content and link people. That’s what we still believe with LeGrow.Studio While it was common to criticize « Eurocrats » for rising rents and other issues, we must acknowledge the significant improvements the EU has provided to help Brussels thriving as a true capital. My experiences and engagements have reinforced my conviction in the European project, demonstrating how collaboration and support can lead to meaningful impacts on communities and individuals. In a resent workshop, representatives from academia and from the Mission cities Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö, have come together to explore and discuss how citizen engagement can be applied to support cities’ efforts towards becoming climate-neutral. In the light of changing demands on politics from citizens, and a democracy in crisis, citizen engagement is growing. As a topic that is gaining traction, citizen engagement was the focus of a workshop hosted by the collaboration initiative Climate-neutral cities 2030 – Open Academy. Representatives from academia and from the Mission cities Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö, came together to explore and discuss how citizen engagement can be applied to support cities’ efforts towards becoming climate-neutral. Kicking-off the year with a bang, along with my SMEunited colleague Valentina Guerra, UCM colleague Matthieu Dewèvre and UNIZO colleague Philippe Van Walleghem, I had the honour to represent SMEunited at the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2024 informal meeting of Ministers of Employment and Social Affairs yesterday and today. In my introductory statement - which you can listen to below - I emphasise the importance of creating a positive economic spiral and room for SMEs to do business as a basis to deliver on social objectives. Curious to know which SMEunited positions we put forward concerning future priorities for a social Europe, social protection - in particular for self-employed, social justice globally and social elements in economic governance? You can discover those more in detail in this article: https://lnkd.in/e9hxiVQb

As we cruise towards 20% of the population in Denmark... the internationals are starting to wake up to the new reality. That's my conclusion, after attending probably the largest English-speaking event in Denmark TechBBQ There are multiple voices in the ecosystem that took upon themselves the burden of representing the interests of the internationals living in Denmark, some of which will be soon presented in Last Week in Denmark. As someone who has actively worked for the International Community for more than a decade, it makes my heart jump to see their actions, actions that we all stand to benefit from. As we near one million internationals in Denmark, it should be clear that no man can take on the responsibility to ensure we have a future in this country. It needs to be a shared responsibility where everyone, with a bit of time and motivation, contributes. That means organization, that means union, that means a common platform. Luckily, there are a few projects coming up soon that will attempt to do either of those three very important actions—to organize, unionize and bring together the internationals living in Denmark. One project that is dear to me, is the advocacy clubs network from AMIS - A More Inclusive Society which I hope will get funded soon. It will empower internationals with the much-needed tools to enact change around. Empowering internationals, allowing them to take up space in society to establish their roots and maintain identities, will connect them to the project, we all care most about... Denmark.

Nine years ago, as I was getting ready to leave late on a Friday evening from the lab at Kent State, I decided to, as I oft did on Fridays before leaving, check the Luxembourg FNR website if there was any news on a grant I'd applied for back in March. (And the expected decision date was listed as June, and it was was, indeed, close to the end of June...) Unlike other times I'd looked, though, the status had changed from "Reviewed" to "Decision". Strange, I thought, because I'd not received anything. A few clicks later, I find a document in the giant file of papers entitled something like "decision letter", and this was sitting there. Because I'd submitted a proposal the previous fall that was rejected, I started reading the letter, and it opened exactly the same way as that rejection letter... but instead, in the middle of the page, was a very different line: "The FNR has the pleasure to inform you that your above mentioned AFR project proposal is retained for funding." Getting (or finding) this letter from the FNR was extremely unexpected, both after the failed attempt the previous year and not least of all because I was having more than a few issues with my PhD project at the time (and a seemingly shaky funding situation) combined with some family and other personal problems, particularly because I was really missing Europe around that time and it didn't feel like I was going to get the chance to get back there at any point soon (some of the things I'd tried unfortunately fell through). This completely changed everything, all at once, and definitely for the better, but that then started three months of paperwork hoop-jumping to get the approval to move to Luxembourg. In some ways, it's also ironic that there are echoes of this in my (imminent) return to Luxembourg this summer: unexpected decision letter from a funding agency leading to my own research project, but preceded by lots of paperwork hoop-jumping and running around to collect documents for various procedures.

We've given a lot of thought to mission-driven approaches to government and social innovation, and how to help organisations become more ambitious, evidence-based and effective. In this publication, colleagues at our parent organisation Nesta and Institute for Government offer some thoughts on what a mission-driven approach to government means and how it can be delivered. https://lnkd.in/eXvdrRE4

Today, I visited the Parliament of Luxembourg for a stimulating conversation about legislative science advice. It is impressive and truly inspirational how #Luxembourg in a few years have established a multidisciplinary Science Unit within Parliament with an incredible impact. The Unit covers legal, natural, and human sciences, as well as economic and environmental expertise. Through the publication of Research Notes, meetings, networkings, and requests by parliamentarians, the Science Unit have found a way to facilitate evidence-informed policy-making while keeping to important principles of impartiality, diversity, and accountability. Indeed, several lessons can be learned for #Denmark and beyond. Many thanks to Secretary General Laurent Scheeck for taking the time to meet, and to Christian Penny and Didier Goossens (picture) for invaluable help in organising and providing insights. More to come soon when we embark on a new project to investigate legislative and governmental science advice in Denmark. With the Australian community facing unprecedented challenges, the need for leaders from all sides of politics, policymakers, and industry experts to come together and discuss solutions has never been greater. The CEDA - Committee for Economic Development of Australia State of the Nation conference is Australia’s premiere public policy forum and is happening again on 26-28 June 2024 in Canberra. I’m proud to be a member of CEDA’s Victorian / Tasmania State Advisory Council, which comprises a diverse group of CEDA Trustees from business, academia and government who provide advice on local issues. This year's theme, "Accelerating Productivity," promises to foster important conversations on topics such as economic recovery, technological advancements, climate policy, and social equity. I’ll be heading to the nation’s capital to fly the flag for the Victorian local government sector. On Day 2 I’ll be attending a collaborative workshop on ‘Cities and Productivity’ featuring Professor Barbara Norman Chair of the Urban Policy Forum, former NSW Cities Minister Rob Stokes and Urbis Managing Partner James Tuma. It promises to be a cracker. I’d encourage anyone wanting a deep dive into the Australian policy landscape to consider signing up and coming along. It’s always a valuable opportunity to reflect on our progress and strategize for the future. I'm looking forward to seeing what insights and discussions emerge from the three days. 📅 Date: 26-28 June 2024 📍 Location: Parliament House, Canberra, ACT For more details, visit Upcoming CEDA events page.
