Why did Vogue stop putting text on covers? Marc Jacobs' guest-edited Vogue cover, one of the most talked-about in recent history, stands out with almost no text—a sharp contrast to the text-heavy Vogue covers of the mid-2000s. Jess Carr's brilliant analysis, "Since When Does Vogue Hate Text?", reveals the trend: early 1900s covers were artful and minimalist, featuring illustrations. By mid-century, text-heavy designs emerged to compete on newsstands. Now, thanks to social media, covers are returning to their artistic roots as social media is now able to handle the marketing. 📚Fashion editorial needs more fashion history. For me, almost every time I pick up a fashion print magazine excited for the old school tactile experience of reading an article, I end up disappointed in the lack of depth and context. This is not to knock the hordes of talented fashion journalists out there; but rather, I find it increasingly hard to find them outside of their own Substacks, podcasts, and social media. Take the Vogue September issue, which I picked up at the Orlando Airport on a whim because of an article on the trend for scented runways. The piece is well written but traces back the idea of scent and experiential runways to … 2014 and RODARTE. While I wrote an entire book on poetry, music, and synaesthesia, I am not a fashion historian. Yet, I do know that the history of fashion and perfume is long and deep, even if you limit the scope to modern fashion. In 1911, Paul Poiret famously scented gowns from his winter collection with scents from his perfume line, Parfums de Rosine. Is this former academic just being difficult or are we not giving readers enough credit? Fashion lovers are hungry for fashion history. Just look at the niche popularity of my friend Kate Strasdin and the Dressed podcast by Cassidy Zachary. I feel like the future of fashion editorial should be better. Context and history matter. What a start to my #research #sabbatical! Two articles published, an interview in Le Monde, and two book chapters at the printers with a delivery date of mid-October. Intellect Books journal article Last week I shared my article ‘The Meaning of the Mask: Ambivalent social identity and mask refusal in COVID America’ was published by the Intellect Books journal 'Fashion, Style and Popular Culture'. Written during the second lockdown of the pandemic in January 2021 while watching the riots at the Capitol Building in Washington D.C., this paper has been a work of great dedication and importance to me. I brought together my research into embodied fashion, dress and public health, and ways sickness is visualised in the West through the lens of cultural history in the country of my birth, America. For many reasons, including disruption due to my own ill health, this article has taken a while to be published, and it’s wonderful to share this with you now. Retrospective, Vol. II Date: 03 April 2016 About the work: In 2016, when I wrote this article, it was clear that brands and other industry players were very interested in #China in terms of its #consumer. After two years living in Shanghai at this point, the question on my mind was: where is the recognition for all the Chinese creative talent? I spoke to Leaf Greener, Andrew Keith, Kai Z Feng, and KIKI XUE for this piece. Fast forward today: While we have witnessed some change, this question still holds true, and it's a topic I have explored for the past eight years, particularly during my time as editor-in-chief at Jing Daily. As time progressed, I realized that this mechanism is rampant across all of fashion. There are always exceptions, but when the industry identifies a "new" consumer segment, it takes a long time for the talent in that community to find its rightful place at the table. ✨ Over the next few weeks, I'll be sharing a retrospective of my work. ✨
