One of the reasons that the number of claims for PTSD amongst combat veterans has risen is that many combat veterans are now coming forward with mild to moderate symptom severity. These veterans are reporting fluctuating levels of distress throughout the year, where memories are dormant some days, and therefore their level of distress is mild to minimal, and are more active on others days, and their level of distress is moderate. #TBT to our 2022 systematic review, meta-analysis, and meta-synthesis exploring the current literature on assistance dogs for military veterans with PTSD. We found that 41 articles were published through 2021. It has been observed that assistance dogs may have a positive influence on veterans with PTSD. However, to confirm this, more methodologically rigorous research is needed - including randomized studies! Struggling with PTSD after serving your country? You're not alone. Veterans are much more likely to experience PTSD than civilians, and over 1 million veterans already receive VA support for it. If your PTSD stems from combat experiences, you may be eligible for VA healthcare, compensation, and treatment. Here's the good news: proving combat PTSD can be simpler than you think. In many cases, your statement can establish a service connection as long as: You were diagnosed with PTSD related to your service. The stressor happened during combat, as a POW, or while facing threats as a drone crew member. For combat veterans, a statement on VA Form 21-0781 can often be enough to prove service connection.
