At U.S. News & World Report’s The State of Equity in America event last month, Olivier Knox asked me on stage if “the kids are all right.” It’s a loaded question. Yes, many are more than all right. As I shared after Montclair State University’s commencement in May, watching over 3600 spring graduates accept their diplomas left me with a sincere sense of hope and optimism about the positive impact they will no doubt have on the world. But this generation is also faced with unprecedented challenges - from the mental health crisis on college campuses to unnecessary barriers that prevent students from completing their degrees (including financial aid obstacles) to figuring out a complicated system as a first generation college student to prevalent disparities when it comes to internship and job opportunities. The list goes on, much of it rooted in systemic, institutional inequities. We discuss all of this and more in the video clip linked below. Most importantly we talk about solutions - as we work hard to make college more accessible and inclusive, we have to accept the responsibility that the population we’re serving doesn't have a future guaranteed and so it's on us to help them acquire the skills and the mindset to take care of themselves post graduation. We need to work together to create opportunities for students of all backgrounds, from all types of institutions, and fight against the inequality of the established system. On our own, we cannot solve all of the world’s problems. But each of us can demonstrate some ways that these problems can be solved. At Montclair we are giving it our best shot. I’d love to hear your thoughts. https://lnkd.in/eEqg3-HP

We are now accepting applications for the 2025 Fellowship class from 10th grade students in the greater Philadelphia area, including Philadelphia suburbs, South Jersey and Princeton. Germination Project: Launched in 2014 Our Mission: to be a convening platform for leaders who will advance innovation, uplift communities, improve lives, and tackle society’s greatest challenges. Our Beliefs: We believe large scale ideas germinate over long periods of time, influenced by many actors, and that compromise and coalition building are critical for acceptance and adoption of region-wide ideas and policies. We believe failure to create space for new skills, new theories, new science and new technologies will stagnate Philadelphia even further. We believe few lead many and the impact from their collective output will outlive us. We believe diverse and multi-generational leaders who hold a rainbow of voices on important social policy and civic issues will move our region into the forefront of evolving social change. We believe a diverse and multigenerational polyarchy injects stability in social activism, promoting gradual and constructive evolution rather than sudden revolution, ensuring a check against radical pressure to destroy institutions to address immediate problems.

Powerful article.
Our President and CEO, Robert Lewis Jr. authored an op-ed that appears in today’s Boston Globe (Boston Globe Media) reflecting on the 50 years since Boston’s busing decision and calling for a unified, action-oriented agenda for a bright future for our city’s youth. ‘I encourage the Boston community, business leaders, families, and, most importantly, our youth, to place a higher expectation on themselves and each other so that together, we can reach our highest potential.’ – Robert Lewis Jr. Together, we must challenge systemic inequities in education, healthcare, and economic mobility to ensure every young person has the opportunity to thrive. At B Lab, we create standards, policies, tools, and programs to transform capitalism for the benefit of all people, communities, and the planet. A key part of our mission is shifting the behavior of business. By adopting new governance models and improving social and environmental performance in line with our standards, businesses not only make a positive difference but also set powerful examples for others, paving the way for broader change. But we don’t stop there: across our network, B Lab runs local and regional programs to equip leaders with practical tools for continuous improvement. A standout initiative is the Impact Improvement Program led by B Lab US & Canada in 2023. This eight-week program, facilitated by DEI mindset coaches from Beyond Inclusion Group, helps B Corps explore racial equity practices and policies. Participants committed 3 ½ hours each week to learn about employee wealth-building, fair-chance hiring, inclusive recruitment and retention, and setting goals for accountability. The program continues with a new cohort in 2024! 📽️ Watch the video by B Lab US & Canada showcasing the remarkable activities of their Racial Equity team in 2023: https://bit.ly/3LbvJv6 🔗 Learn more about our work in 2023 in our Annual Report: https://bit.ly/4dzcW9U
