Fed Chair, Jerome Powell, delivered the semi-annual monetary policy report before Congress this week. The overriding theme was one of caution, with the Fed remaining focused on the data and wary of reigniting inflation with a premature rate cut. The market was relatively unmoved by the report, but a softer-than-expected US inflation print on Thursday helped to push shares higher and Treasury yields lower. Today’s encouraging inflation data fuels optimism for a Fed rate cut in September. Historically, Fed rate cuts after extended pauses at higher rates have been well received, even when markets are near all-time highs.
