Fed Chair, Jerome Powell, delivered the semi-annual monetary policy report before Congress this week. The overriding theme was one of caution, with the Fed remaining focused on the data and wary of reigniting inflation with a premature rate cut. The market was relatively unmoved by the report, but a softer-than-expected US inflation print on Thursday helped to push shares higher and Treasury yields lower. Governor Waller disappointed markets today by suggesting the Fed is not in a rush to cut rates in 2024. 😕 Despite acknowledging that the Fed is getting closer to achieving 2% inflation, Waller said the FOMC is looking to avoid cutting rates "reactively and by large amounts" as policymakers have done in previous cycles. Instead, he believes rates should be lowered "methodically and carefully”, defying expectations for aggressive interest rate cuts by market participants.✋ Waller's remarks are being closely watched after his overly dovish speech in November where he signalled his confidence that inflation is under control led to a market rally which eased financial conditions. Not so quickly. #federalreserve #interestrates #inflation #economy #markets #investing
