One of my top accounts called me today and immediately apologized for calling so frequently recently...I did not interrupt them, but in my head, I definitely thought "I am grateful this person feels comfortable calling me" and "if you're calling me, we are doing something that should ultimately build up the brands I work for and my own little business. We all agree that sales isn't for everyone, so why then do we expect all founders to be able to sell? Just because they came up with the idea? Every founder should sell initially. But once you have a few sales and validation? It's time to ramp an outbound team and sell on scale. Then go work on improving the product. Give a great product to a hungry and skilled sales team and let them do wonders.

The number 1 thing to stop doing in sales… I am guilty of this, Comparing yourself to other Sales reps around you, This is particularly applicable when your in a fast paced environment that hires a lot of new people frequently, It’s so easy to start judging your own performance based on that of someone else’s, It’s something subconsciously that you have to cut out, After all, how can you ever improve your own ability to sell if your so focused on what’s happening around you, The competitive nature in Sales will always place this level of pressure on us, but the best Sales reps have so much confidence in their own ability, They only ever compare themselves to where and who they want to become, Not people around them.

Figure out your “why”. Be specific with it. Why do you HAVE to hit quota every month. If it doesn’t exist, or it’s not strong enough, find a different profession. There’s no technical skill that will ensure you hit quota every month. The bad times will come when there are too many things going wrong that are out of your control, and the only thing that’s going to matter then is how badly you need it.
