As we gear up for the Victoria Day long weekend celebrations, it’s important to keep in mind how the sounds, sights and smells of fireworks impact our pets! The loud sound of fireworks may lead to pets experiencing more stress. The tips below can help you and your animals have a safe and enjoyable long weekend. - Keep your furry friend indoors during firework displays, and make sure to close windows and pet doors leading outside. - Startled animals will seek a place to hide. This means if your cat or dog manages to get outside, it can be very easy to lose them. Microchips are the most effective way to reunite lost pets with their families, so make sure your pet has been microchipped! - Make sure your animal is wearing its collar and ID tags. - Walk your dog before it gets dark to avoid going outside once the fireworks start. - Have a safe place for your companion animal to feel at ease, like a crate or other confinement space. #UsdanPetTips As you prepare for Easter celebrations, remember to safeguard your beloved pets: 🌸 Opt for pet-safe flowers; avoid Easter lilies, as they are highly toxic to cats. 🍫 Keep pets away from the Easter egg hunt to prevent them from ingesting toxic treats. 🌿 When assembling Easter baskets, choose paper grass instead of cellophane to prevent an intestinal blockage. 🐰 Consider a soft toy bunny instead of adopting a live one. Rabbits make wonderful pets but require careful consideration and preparation before welcoming them into your family.

New Year's Eve is one of the scariest, most stressful times of the year for pets and wildlife, with unpredictable loud noises, strong smell of explosives and flashing lights. 🥳💥 Here are our tips for keeping your pets safe during the celebrations: 🎆 Please be as prepared as possible, including walking dogs in the afternoon, feeding large meals to encourage sleeping and getting them used to firework sounds. 🎆 Shut all external doors/windows, keep curtains tightly shut and provide quiet safe space/den/room filled with your pet's favourite toys/treats/blankets. 🎆 Distract pets with TV/radio/music (reggae works apparently!), act as if nothing's wrong/different and reward calm behaviour. 🎆 For particularly nervous pets, contact us in advance for advice on safe medications, plug-ins, sprays, anxiety jackets, etc. 🎆 Keep water bowls topped up as anxious pets may drink more. 🎆 Check microchip details are up to date too in case of escapes. Happy New Year! 😃🎉 #passingpaws #petcremations #petloss #griefsupport #pets #cats #dogs #petsofperth #supportbeyondtheservice #vet #fireworks #petsafety #NYE #NewYearsEve #happynewyear

The Fourth of July can be a particularly challenging time for dogs, with the fireworks causing fear and anxiety in many. This is because dogs, like humans, are naturally wired to be afraid of sudden, loud noises, which keeps them safe. However, some dogs take this fear to the extreme, exhibiting signs of stress such as panting, howling, pacing, whining, hiding, trembling, and even self-injury or escape. To protect your dog from fireworks, there are several steps you can take. First, consult with your veterinarian to rule out any underlying health issues that may be contributing to your dog's fear. If your dog is already anxious, consider using a noise-canceling headset, such as Mutt Muffs, to muffle the sounds. Additionally, you can use a pheromone like Adaptil, which can help reduce stress. Another option is to create a "safe haven" in your home, where your dog can feel safe and secure. This can include closing the blinds or curtains, playing classical music, and using a white noise machine or box fan. You can also use a long-lasting food-dispensing or puzzle toy to release food continuously during the show, which can help your dog make a positive association with the noises. If your dog is particularly anxious, consider using an anxiety wrap, which can help lower heart rate and other clinical signs of fear and anxiety. It's also important to remember that while comforting your dog when they are scared can be helpful, it's important to ensure that the comforting is actually helping to reduce the fear and anxiety, rather than exacerbating it. What steps have you taken to protect your dog from fireworks? Share your tips and experiences in the comments below.
