We have all experienced the disconnect between Architectural education and practice…. ……what do you think is the solution? I am a big advocate for the Apprenticeship model and we are completing our first year of the L7 Apprenticeship in the practice partnering with Oxford Brookes. This growing path to Architecture allows students to earn and learn, whilst gaining experiences of practice to feed back into the University. It’s a mutually beneficial system where practices can support students and use their time and work for areas of research. It has its downsides in terms of longer period and the students need to be well versed in time management but on the whole, I think it is a clear way forward to improve the routes into the profession —— ♻️ Repost so your friends and connections can be inspired too P.S. What is your experience of Apprenticeships? #architect #architecture #architecturestudent #architecturestudents

I love that you are addressing this. We need more architects to be vocal about it. I have been an arch. technologist for many years and recently i went back to school to complete my degree and hopefully continue my journey to become and architect. Going back to school i seen how bad it is! Students are really not being taught real world application of architecture and skills, ok to be fair its not all doom and gloom however i found that the biggest issues is when it comes to construction , detailing and technology and the application thereof. Hence i have been on a mission to teach / mentor these kids but the sad part is that no one is interested.

Love the fact you’re raising awareness surrounding the Apprenticeship! If anyone would like to find out more please take a look at HiBarn Apprentices or send me a dm 💌

One of the best parts of an apprenticeship style course is that students get to see exactly what the real world job entails well before their degree is finished. And the feedback I’ve heard from programs I’ve run at other practices for paid internships midway through their course was how valuable the real world experience was for completing their studies.

I think it's aways a good idea to combine theory with practice. Imo it's the best way to learn and new skills. Theory is important, but you then have to take action and actually apply your theory. I think that's a major issue in a lot of educations. Really like your approach of a mutual benefical system for architects and the educational institution. I think this way everyone can profit and especially for an expensive education like architecture it's great to be able to start earning money while you are learning.

Firstly, Part 2 courses should strike a better balance between design-focused assessments and 'MPL'. 'Part 2' felt like a 2-year extension to the Part 1 course when I studied (admittedly a fair while ago, now!) and didn't really go much further than the "year out" for preparing for professional practice

Interesting view. More architects should talk about this. Chris Simmons

I'd love to know whether there are any statistics to back up the claim that the apprenticeship route is opening up the professional pathway to those who might not - for economic reasons - otherwise complete the pathway. That is not a snipey, cynical statement - I genuinely would love to hear/ see evidence that apprenticeships are having that effect. Are you aware of any?
