Meet Superintendent, Sean Timoney! "Don't sweat the small stuff" is a quote that sticks with Sean through his career... "Early on in my career, I became fixated with everything needing to be perfect. That was fine of course when I was working by myself or with a small crew. As I grew and became a foreman, so did my crew size and project scales. I went from managing 5-10 people to managing 20, then 50, then 100. I could not have handled this transition without taking a step back and not trying to control every detail and trivial thing. This change allowed me to focus on the big picture and trust people.  When we look back at things with the perspective of time passed and wisdom, most of it ended up being small stuff." For a lot of people sitting behind at a desk all day isn't for them. And of the things that doesn't get brought up much is that the construction industry offers you a career where you can be outside, be inside, or be in a mix of working environments. -If you're a project manager you might spend most of your day in the office and get to visit job sites for part of the day. -If you're a foreman you might spend an hour of your day on a laptop and the rest on the job site with your crew. -If you're a laborer or operator you'll spend most of your day on site. The last 6-8 weeks before the end of financial year can be difficult to navigate for Clients, Candidates and Consultants. 👷♂️ Starting at entry-level construction labor --- back to entry level 🔥 From 2013 - Present, I've dedicated the past ten years to the excavation industry. 🚧🚧 Working with a handful of companies in the northwest to finally start a company in 2021 has been a journey, as many of you have similar beginnings in your line of work. --- Each new position requires new skill sets and mindset shifts --- 1. Labor 2. Pipe layer 3. Foreman 4. Superintendent.... Forget being a project manager; I like to be out in the field! lol😎 ✔️ Now, from a business owner perspective, I'm back at an entry-level position, taking my experiences and building new skill sets one day at a time. ✅ One of my biggest shortcomings early on was going too fast and not properly thinking the work plan out. As the slogan goes, "TIME IS MONEY." I failed to realize that a game plan with any endeavor saves much time in execution! 🔥💪

Needing to take grasp of current claims, projects, and meeting the entirety of the team and beginning relationships with them. A typical day will start early, ensuring availability when current projects begin. Creating schedules and plans to review with the CEO, to ensure I have a proper office to field balance. Collaborating with all departments of the business, and networking with our client’s safety teams. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗮 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿? As I step into the role of safety director at Ascendent, I will be responsible for creating safety policies, identifying hazards, training employees, investigating accidents and incidents, making sure rules are followed, encouraging safety through various techniques, planning for emergencies, and working with others throughout the organization to ensure health and safety principles are always improving. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻/𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻/𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆? I started construction at a young age as a laborer for a small excavation company. This was followed by moving into small commercial demolition. In June of 2010, I joined Envirocon, and was initially dispatched to a dam demolition and dredging project. This gave me experience in industrial demolition and HAZWOPER work. From there, I moved up the ranks, becoming an equipment operator, followed by crew lead and foremen, and eventually a site supervisor. I joined Envirocon’s health and safety team in 2016, and since then have worked with a few other demolition contractors in both the industrial and commercial demolition and abatement world. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗝𝗼𝗯 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆? I chose a career in safety because of a very serious near-miss I was involved in during my career - an event that could have been prevented. I told myself I wanted to ensure nothing like this could ever happen to others as long as I had something to do about it. 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘛𝘸𝘰!

What unexpected insights did your first job reveal about yourself and your career path? I went to New York City College of Technology in New York as an international student in 2006 and graduated in 2011. After my graduation, I started working as a construction inspector, conducting inspections of concrete, steel, grout, waterproofing and other materials in the tri-state area of New York City. I hardly use to make enough fortune then for survival and it really use to be one of the toughest jobs in the construction trade and people working in the same trade are much familiar with it. Frigid mornings, snow storms and freezing cold temperatures this is what I remember the most out of all! I started my struggle and started building my career path and realized my potential that if I am capable of doing such hard work then I think I deserve to be at some place better? Conclusion of the story is that a career path begins with your devotion to work and commitment and if you think you have the potential for that please carry on to this bumpy road and truly one day you will achieve what you have desired?
