What unexpected insights did your first job reveal about yourself and your career path? I went to New York City College of Technology in New York as an international student in 2006 and graduated in 2011. After my graduation, I started working as a construction inspector, conducting inspections of concrete, steel, grout, waterproofing and other materials in the tri-state area of New York City. I hardly use to make enough fortune then for survival and it really use to be one of the toughest jobs in the construction trade and people working in the same trade are much familiar with it. Frigid mornings, snow storms and freezing cold temperatures this is what I remember the most out of all! I started my struggle and started building my career path and realized my potential that if I am capable of doing such hard work then I think I deserve to be at some place better? Conclusion of the story is that a career path begins with your devotion to work and commitment and if you think you have the potential for that please carry on to this bumpy road and truly one day you will achieve what you have desired? Remember! hard work always pays you off, sooner or later it comes you just have to hang in there. A journey from a construction inspector to a project management professional... As part of Careers in Construction Month, we are excited to highlight the diverse pathways within the construction industry. Today, we’re featuring Saul Lopez and his journey, offering valuable insight and advice for those curious about pursuing a career in construction. Background and Career Path 1. What inspired you to choose a career in construction? The complexity of construction and the problem-solving it requires drew me in. Plus, the ability to control how much you earn based on your effort and dedication was a big factor. 2. How did you get started in the industry? I started at 19, working on a parking deck for Florida State University in Tallahassee. 3. What roles have you held in your construction career? I began as a laborer, then moved to carpenter helper, carpenter, carpenter foreman, general foreman, and now assistant superintendent. Recently, I transitioned to the office to develop skills in 3D modeling and estimating. 4. What do you enjoy most about working in construction? As I mentioned before, I love the problem-solving and the flexibility—it’s never the same day twice. It’s not a repetitive desk job; you never know what the day will bring. Growth and Skills 6. What key skills have helped you succeed in the construction industry? Being bilingual has been a huge help, along with being a self-starter and always wanting to learn more on every job. 7. How has the industry changed since you started? There's a lot more respect for the hard work that goes into construction nowadays, which I really appreciate. 8. Did you have a mentor? How did they impact your career? If not, would you have liked one? No, I didn’t have a mentor, but I wish I did. I’d like to find one in the future because you can never stop learning. Advice and Insights 9. What advice would you give to someone new to the construction industry? Build strong friendships with your crew and surround yourself with a good team to help you succeed! 10. What qualities do you think make a great construction worker? Punctuality, teamwork, and the ability to see the bigger picture. 11. Why would you recommend construction as a career path? It’s never boring. It’s fast-paced, with lots of different people, and I can’t imagine myself in any other field. Stay tuned as we continue to highlight different career paths throughout the month! #CareersInConstruction #RubyCollins

If there is one skill for me to select to develop in Construction industry amongst engineers at all levels , that would be "Wisdom" Yet , Wisdom is the one skill that is impossible to teach, not because it is impossible to do so , but because of the super ego of accepting the fact that you need training on that front Wisdom is the transfer of genuine capabilities emergent from a unique mix of knowledge , experience and values that otherwise would take a life time to develop and in most cases you dont get to build at all. Finally, your attitude to life and learning will determine your Wisdom acumen that you will march with in your career ! It is your choice.
