access ➡ understand ➡ appraise ➡ apply that's what you want people to do with information that's important to their health That's something I got from an excellent and generous webinar yesterday by Gill Rowlands, Professor of General Practice at Newcastle University, and a GP. Her main research interests are health literacy and the development of evidence-based policy to support health literacy improvements. Gill has been working with WHO colleagues in Europe on the development of a new tool to measure organisational health literacy. It was another Patient Information Forum (PIF) webinar that was well worth the time. A recording will be available to #PIF members - you will learn something. Though the title was Measuring organisational health literacy, Gill made the basics of health literacy very clear, and explained how it can be promoted in a range of situations. For me, there was interesting crossover into the world of access assessment (wayfinding signage - Ian Streets 😉 ) - can the two help each other ? (And lovely to see a familiar face in Julia Bell!) #HealthLiteracy #HealthInequalities #PIF #DigitalLiteracy

🩺 Happy Health Literacy Month from PracticeSeeker.com! 🩺 Join us in celebrating! Health Literacy Month is an ideal opportunity to consider how healthcare professionals can make medical information more accessible and easier to understand. Here are some effective strategies to enhance patient communication: 1. Simplify medical jargon: Use everyday language to replace complex terms, making it easier for patients to comprehend. 2. Provide easy-to-read materials: Incorporate visuals and ensure content is at an accessible reading level. 3. Use decision aids: Assist patients in making informed choices by providing visual tools to explain treatment options. 4. Teach-back method: Encourage patients to repeat instructions in their own words to confirm understanding. 5. Encourage engagement: Create an environment where patients feel comfortable asking questions and involve family members in discussions. Let’s collaborate to ensure every patient understands their care and can make empowered health decisions. #HealthLiteracyMonth #HealthcareCommunication #PatientCare #PracticeSeeker

Patient-inclusive, outcomes-centred commercial healthcare leader | Alchemist of perennial top- & bottom-line success | Facilitator of customer & corporate wins one strategic and collaborative step at a time
Happy to be learning more about facilitating #healthliteracy this week from the speakers at the IHA Health Literacy Conference this week. Not surprisingly, the themes that resurface frequently and resonate strongly are those of being human-centered, inclusive in approach and remembering that each individual’s lived experience contributes to differences in the way that we learn and retain information. We have come a long way but still have much to do. Here are a couple takeaways/reminders: -9/10 patients do not receive health information in a way that they can use or understand (from the Department of Health and Human Services) - sharing why information is important for and with patients has impact - not every patient education tool is for everyone but we need tools and methods to meet the learning styles for all - prioritize meaningful engagements: among many benefits, it leverages the patient’s lived experience, builds trust and empowers decision making. #ihahlc2024 #patientcentered #healthconsumers #adultlearning
