In our latest blog we chatted to one of our advisors, Dr. Jack Scannell, about the issues in biopharma R&D. Jack is known for coining the term ‘Eroom’s Law’ in his 2012 paper, “Diagnosing the Decline in Pharmaceutical R&D Efficiency,” published in Nature Portfolio's Drug Discovery. Despite exponential gains in input efficiency, Jack noticed a decrease in R&D output efficiency... to be precise; inflation-adjusted R&D expenses per new drug launched roughly doubled every nine years from 1950 to 2010! It was clear that something was wrong, but what? Jack went on to segregate his hypotheses into two main groups; running out of critical resources & doing the wrong things with superficially higher efficiency. Understanding these problems is critical in understanding how decentralized approaches may reshape drug development, and why we think they’re necessary.
