Delighted to share our recent comment in Nature Portfolio Nature Reviews Materials addressing a fundamental challenge in the industrial translation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) - integrating safety and sustainability principles in MOF design. Despite their exceptional versatility in energy storage, gas capture, drug delivery, and catalysis, MOFs face significant industrial adoption challenges. Our comment examines how these materials transform under various environmental conditions and proposes a ‘safe and sustainable by design’ (SSbD) approach to overcome these limitations. Why this matters: • Understanding transformation mechanisms is crucial for designing stable, functional MOFs • Early-stage safety considerations accelerate commercial translation • Sustainable design principles ensure both environmental safety and practical utility Grateful to collaborate with Swaroop Chakraborty, David Fairen-Jimenez, Iseult Lynch, Christian Pfrang, Superb Misra and Iullia Mikulska on this work advancing sustainable materials design. I recently co-authored an article in Nature Portfolio (Nature Careers) with one of the most endearing articles of my career, about doing fieldwork with amazing people. I've had the privilege of spending 10 weeks of my life on #SableIslandNationalPark #ParksCanada for my PhD research. While collecting microplastics & falling back in love with science, I've met some long-term friends who I have shared some of the most unique experiences of my life with. We lived, spoke, & wrote about our experiences together over the past two summers & how other early career scientists can learn from our lessons. Together with Dr. Sebastian Losacker, I co-authored a "Behind the Paper" post for Nature Portfolio in which we discuss our recent research on bioeconomy patents. You can find the post here: https://lnkd.in/eYHbdt8W To complement our findings, I developed an interactive data map that provides a dynamic way to explore the diverse topics within our bioeconomy patent dataset. Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/eB2VWzN4 Built with SentenceTransformers, Mixedbread, UMAP, HDBSCAN, Toponymy, DataMapPlot and Mistral AI
