Really looking forward to speaking at this event: "Preparing for the Digital Product Passport." For those that don't know, the The EU Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a mandatory electronic record attached to garments which will contain key information about the product, its creation and its sustainability. With regulation stating that the DPP will be fully required by 2030 we'll be unpacking the impact that it's going to have on the fashion industry with regards to traceability and circularity (including the role of repair!) and will be discussing crucial preparatory steps. ✨ A Turning Point in the Journey ✨ As I approach my final weeks (for now) working in fashion and textile supply chains, it’s clear to me that the industry needs real change. After two years in conventional fashion e-commerce, I’ve become disillusioned by how little attention is paid to sustainability. 🌍 🛑 Despite all the buzz, I’ve realized that awareness alone isn’t enough. It’s clear now: We need real change—and it won’t come from more campaigns or appeals to conscience. We all know how damaging exploitative production practices are, but the industry keeps moving at the same pace because no one seems willing to curb their own greed. Sustainability shouldn’t be a trend or an option—it should be a no-brainer. The products we buy shouldn’t be made with toxic inputs, harm the environment, or rely on exploitative labor practices. 💡 That’s why, from November, I’m taking a new direction, focusing on the policies, laws, and EU regulations that will shape a more transparent future—not just for fashion, but across industries. Whether it's eco-friendly cement being used in Paris for the Olympics, products for the conscious consumer, or why TEMU and Shein are quite so successful in a world that's supposed to abhor disposable products, sustainability is constantly on the agenda. Yesterday's eCom Collab Club™ 🥞 London brought together a top notch panel of brands, agencies and tech partners to get stuck into the topic and you can catch up with my thoughts in the latest episode of Recap from Cogent2. Themes include: - Focusing on a specific problem / challenge authentically - The impact of physical retail on sustainability - Incrementality - Sustainability in consumers' decision making process - Where Tech fits in - Supply Chain Choices The biggest takeaway for me - and Dylan Connor Fernandez flagged this on Linkedin yesterday - was the incrementality. All of the brands involved highlighted how they'd focused on small steps and trying to do better and kept their focus on constant iteration, rather than searching for a magic sustainability bullet. Rich Evans did a great job hosting the panel in Nathan Lomax's absence - although I did feel there was a clear lack of brown shoes on display and Adam Pearce - as ever - was on point driving the morning. Kudos to everyone involved in organising and running the session, enjoyable, informative and entertaining as ever! I was talking a couple of weeks ago about these joined initiatives that beauty companies take more and more to accelerate the move towards sustainability. TRASCE is now official, with 15 major companies involved. The goal? Strengthen the understanding of cosmetics industry supply chains, assess related social & environmental risks, and determine actions to be implemented to support suppliers in becoming more sustainable. They'll use a common digital platform, Transparency-One, to map out the supply chain across the whole value chain. https://lnkd.in/d5jxpQ36

💡 What can retail do to support consumer behavior change towards a more sustainable society? Richard Woodbridge, CEO at Oscar Jacobson, shared his thoughts at our event Leading the Change 💚 The event was focused on Sustainable Business Model Transformation and it was inspiring to learn about what the prestigious Swedish brand has been doing to take more sustainable actions. Richard shared the experience of developing Sustain by Oscar Jacobson in this video. And here below, you can read a quote about the company's efforts regarding consumer behavior change: 📢 “[…] Our core consumer, a guy around his 40s, is not usually the one you would think who is leading the change in terms of buying, selling second hand and so on. So that is something that is against us in the sense that we need to educate the consumer in the need for this change. “[…] Obviously, it is easy to push around responsibility. It is easy for us to say, ‘Come on, people need to understand.’ On average, within the EU today, a clothing item is worn 17 times. That is not sustainable and needs to change. The consumer can easily change that: when you dress 19 times, you have already improved. “But for us as a company, we need to take our responsibility and first of all create those kind of spaces where the consumer can be more sustainable. But also, we need to educate and make sure that the consumer—in a positive and fun way—understands why this is good or why it could make a difference. “So the consumer needs to take his or her responsibility and we, as a company, need to take our responsibility." 🙏 Thank you for your insights and a great discussion, Richard! What is the Digital Product Passport (#DPP)? In the last few months we have heard a lot about Digital Product Passport. There is a mix feeling between the small/medium new brands that wants to emerge like VEJA or ASKET and make, out of their #transparency, a strong part of the brand identity 😎 ...and the big brands that are afraid to share... 😳 It may be so complicated to back up some claims that it's easier to keep ti for you 🙄 Doing like this they cannot give a good example out there and it seems they are not doing much The Digital Product Passport is something that can help giving the same weight to different brands size and product. It may be something that will change our way, not only to make shopping, but also to thing and to approach the business. Will you take the same sourcing decision if you have to share the real #impact of your product to your customers? Will you keep your supply chain as it is or there are some weakness you don't want to show? 😕 We do not know yet what is the DPP, not even the European Commission and government that should be working on setting up the right standard from 2027. We will try to see what is the DPP with one of the main expert worldwide on this topic, that is working not only with brands, but also with associations, to make sure that technologies will enable this transition.
