Fast Facts Undergrads: about 30,000 Top 5 majors: Engineering, Biological Sciences, Business, Computer Science, Government & Politics SAT middle 50 percent: 1400-1520, ACT 32-35, Grades: primarily A's and B's The top majors are all LEPs, or Limited Enrollment Programs. They have "more competitive admission criteria beyond the university’s general requirements." If you apply to an LEP and do not get admitted to that major, you could still meet the university's general requirements; in that case, you would be admitted to the College of Arts & Letters, where you can be advised on pathways toward your preferred major. We had a long UMD discussion in the chat, where I learned that this year was more competitive than ever. In this webinar UMD said that their applications increased and their yield is increasing, but the space available in the freshman class did not increase. Counselors from Maryland noted that many of their "high-fliers" did not even get into the university, let alone the LEP. UMD said that they denied admission to many students who would have been admitted 2 to 3 years ago. If you do apply to Maryland, remember to apply early; get all materials in by Nov. 1.

Cost belief trajectories of undergraduate computer science students https://lnkd.in/eU3XEPWE 50 free prints available at https://lnkd.in/eqKb-_ke Congrats to Ella Christiaans on her first first-authored article! Computer science is useful for future careers, however students often meet challenges and psychological consequences of such challenges: perceived costs. We investigated semester-long trajectories of four cost perceptions & their relations to achievement, major intentions, and career intentions. All cost beliefs showed average increases, although with nuanced differences in levels & slopes; the 4 costs differentially predicted outcomes. Women reported steeper increases compared to men. The findings highlight differential functioning of costs, w/ implications cost-focused interventions.
