When states fail to meet their Olmstead requirement to provide integrated community supports, it can be difficult to know where to turn. Luckily, each state has a Protection and Advocacy Agency (P&A) that provides legal-based advocacy services for people with disabilities. Indiana Disability Rights is the P&A for this state and helps to support the community integration rights of persons with disabilities. Making Waves for Good. ADA Architectural Usability, Web Accessibility, and ADA Risk Management Expert. I believe in a world where accessibility is a priority. Practitioner in making the unseen visible.
Advocacy From Experience🌊 As a wheelchair user, I know firsthand that those with disabilities understand our needs best. We see barriers to mobility that others might overlook. The phrase "nothing about us without us" has guided the disability rights movement since the 1990s, and it's a principle I deeply support. Inspired by Judy Heumann’s legacy, true advocacy comes from lived experience. Representation leads to real change. Ready to ensure your business serves everyone? 2020 changed the world and caused a lot of people to step back and reassess things. The way many advocated and what they advocated for pivoted. Bridging the gap between social and Disability Justice became more important than ever. Here’s a snippet of what founder and CEO Keri Gray had to say about these things during her fireside chat from last year’s Virtual Ability, Inc’s annual International Disability Rights Affirmation Conference. The conference theme was “Do, Create, Live.” You can watch the entire interview here. [Video description: An animated/illustrated clip of Keri during a fireside chat. Advocacy - It's Not a Choice: It's a Duty In South Carolina, advocating for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) is more than a responsibility—it's a duty we all share. As someone deeply involved with The Arc of South Carolina, I've witnessed firsthand the transformative power of advocacy. One of the most impactful events we host is Disability Advocacy Day. This annual event is a cornerstone for our community, offering a platform for individuals with IDD to voice their concerns, share their stories, and connect with lawmakers. It's an opportunity for everyone to learn how to be better self-advocates and to understand the policies that affect our lives. Why is advocacy so important? Because every person deserves the chance to live a life of dignity and opportunity. Advocacy ensures that those with IDD have access to the resources, support, and recognition they deserve. It breaks down barriers, challenges stereotypes, and fosters a more inclusive society. On Disability Advocacy Day, we come together to make our voices heard. We learn, we share, and we grow as a community. This event is not just for those with disabilities but for anyone who believes in equality and justice. It's a day to stand up, speak out, and make a difference. Join us in this vital mission. Let's learn from each other and become stronger advocates. Together, we can create a world where everyone is valued and respected. My A to Z on #DisabilityRights A is for advocacy! There is no one better to talk about when discussing Disability rights than activist Judith Heumann, who campaigned for the rights of disabled people until she passed away in March 2023.
