I posted that I’m about to embark on a new journey after spending about the same amount of time spent in my very first career as U.S Airman as I did starting my second career with Spurs Sports & Entertainment. It’s bittersweet leaving somewhere I’ve created a whole family and now I’m off to start a new exciting adventure with a new company BEST Crowd Management. So I want to genuinely say thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey for me- I appreciate every bit of support and guidance and will hold every word dear to me! 🫶🏾. I don’t usually post things that are personal however, I did want to share a conversation from a one -on- one with My mentor, supervisor , boss, and now Friend who helped me grow in the position where I otherwise wouldn’t have grown. This particular day he asked me out of these three words which one do you consider yourself to be a contender, a competitor or a commander and he said after you choose one I’ll tell you what each one means? I thought about what each word meant to me for a minute or so and I told him that I considered myself a commander and he then asked me to explain reason and then he would give me the definitions. I can’t remember exactly why I didn’t feel like the competitor and contender didn’t sound like who I was in my current role but that was the main reason I didn’t choose them, as a member of the Security Management Team, I didn’t feel like those two words fit the description of any role I currently filled. So he began explaining them one by one ( bear with me)
Contender- shows up and does just what’s needed nothing more nothing less. Basically the bare minimum type of person.
Competitor- this is the person that comes in and goes above and beyond. Tries to advance themselves.
Commander- the only difference between the commander and the competitor is the Commander takes people with them!
He then asked me would I change my answer after knowing the definitions. I said no.
I say this to say that I just left my position as the Event Security Coordinator for SS&E after 4+ years in that position and I’m pretty sure that I didn’t take someone with me but I may have damn sure built a pretty damn good replacement if given the chance to be one. All they have to do is look close enough. 😉
