We are introducing the Global Whisky Challenge, the world's first whisky competition to evaluate whiskies made within three geographical regions. The Global Whisky Challenge will define excellence in whiskies worldwide. The 2024 competition is now accepting entries. Wine Country Network, Inc., the premier producer of professional beverage competitions in the USA, organizes the GWC. They are most famous for the Denver International Spirits Competition and the North American Bourbon and Whiskey Competition. The Global Whisky Challenge aims to define excellence in whisky production worldwide and permit distillers of all sizes from all locations to compete globally. The judging is focused entirely just on whisky/whiskey. Did you know that in the French wine industry, one producer would probably NEVER help pour another French producer's wines? The South African wine industry camaraderie has enabled their industry to grow leaps and bounds. The slew of reports from different publications such as Business Times have highlighted the challenging times F&B face globally. South African wines have defied trends and are powering through these difficult times. Sharing and costing have often been cited as key factors among producers. I was honored to be part of a fireside chat that highlighted the growth in South African wines. As of 2023, approximately 39% of wines are exported, with the UK and Europe traditionally being major markets. However, the industry is witnessing a shift towards Asia, particularly with Japan emerging as a key player. Now is the perfect time to explore these exceptional wines. IRELAND'S CALL 2. SORRY! I mistakenly left out an Irish idea that was one of my favourites - even though it never saw the light of day. It was DISTILLED GUINNESS, a 40% spirit distilled from the beer itself. It was in response to an idea to create a Guinness Whiskey which was fraught with problems. Distilled Guinness was a better solution. And it had several advantages : 1. Its provenance would be Guinness, not the country where it was made. 2. It would avoid confrontation with the various Whisk(e)y governing bodies. 3. You could distil today and sell tomorrow. 4. And you could manipulate the taste to fit your aims. The idea just popped out and was based on a comment many years earlier where someone said : "First we create a fermented product, a beer. Then we distil it, put it in barrels and age it to become whisky." Back in the IDV days we would have tried it in a heartbeat. But I could make no progress while I worked for Diageo. DOUBLE-GOLD, NZ Spirits Awards 2024 SILVER, NZ Small Batch Gin Awards 2024 SILVER, London Spirits Competition 2023 SILVER, NZ Spirits Awards 2023 BRONZE, The Junipers 2023 That's what happens if you continuously improve processes, listen to feedback and refine the recipe. Back when we scouted out potential premises for our distillery a designated cellar door space was somewhere on the 'nice to have' list. Our main concern was to have enough space for the production equipment and a good storage area (pallets and pallets of bottles and boxes and whatnot take up a LOT of space). We were so lucky we ended up with a decent cellar door and enough tasting space for groups up to 10. Ever since we got our off-license, cellar door sales have generated a crucial income stream - right up there with trade, often surpassing it, especially in off-season months. But what's more important: the direct feedback from consumers has been invaluable. Every time someone comments on what flavours they pick up on and what they particularly like, we take note. And those notes help us make better spirits. In just under 2 years we've collected 22 medals across our four core range gins and we're obviously incredibly stoked about the industry recognition. But what we care even more about is whether our consumers enjoy the gin. In the end it really comes down to the old business adage: never lose sight of your target audience.
