Having had the opportunity to visit Royal United Services Institute a few months ago (representing Thomas Murray), it is great to see the insights that come out of the institute. The keynote speech yesterday by Minister Doughty on "Securing Cyberspace" made as part of the RUSI "Securing Cyberspace Conference" is well worth a read. Key areas covered. The increasing cost of cyber incidents (estimated by the World Economic Forum be 24 billion dollars by 2027), the clear link between cyber risk and geopolitics, and a focus on community accountability and responsibility for #cybersecurity. https://lnkd.in/enGajUGJ

The cyber landscape is changing. More and more can we see the importance of cyber resilience, from companies to government cyber resilience affects us all. As such it was a pleasure to see so many enthusiastic people together at the excellently organized ONE Conference. Together with other colleagues from the Rijksinspectie Digitale Infrastructuur I've had the privilege to connect with experts across the field like Ben Kokx, Zerocopter and the Nationaal Cyber Security Centrum (NCSC-NL). These days have been great to share valuable insights in regards to recent developments. For example the Rijksinspectie Digitale Infrastructuur together with Ministry of Economic Affairs in the form of Hugo Lenssen and Brenda van der Wal gave a presentation on the RED 3.3 Delegated Act and the Cyber Resilience Act. Existing and upcoming legislation on the cyber resilience of Radio products and Products with Digital elements respectively. It has been a fruitful two days. I am certain that the ideas shared at the ONE Conference will lead to a more resilient tomorrow.

Writing in The Post, CyberCX's Dan Richardson said that there are five primary objectives New Zealand's next cyber security strategy should focus on looking towards 2030: 🔹 Protecting critical infrastructure 🔹 Fighting scams 🔹 Bolstering the South Pacific 🔹 Hardening government systems 🔹 Deepening collaboration between government and industry “Speaking with business and government leaders, it’s clear that New Zealand faces some stark choices," Dan writes. "If we get this wrong, New Zealanders risk being left more exposed to the harms of cyber attacks and less able to benefit from the rewards of a healthy digital economy." "New Zealand will also be a less appealing security partner, as strong cyber security will be an essential prerequisite for future defence and intelligence technology partnerships." ADAPT's study of Australia's top government CISOs shows that half consider themselves to be 'leading the way' in most areas outlined by the Australian Government's Six Shields. In today's world, security is paramount. NATO mandates its members pledge 2% of their GDP to defense. Similarly, businesses allocate about 2% of their annual budget to technology. However, a mere fraction, maybe 10% of the technology budget—equating to just 0.2% of the overall budget—is earmarked for cybersecurity. This paltry sum is woefully insufficient, leaving gaping vulnerabilities that cybercriminals can, and do, identify and exploit with ease. To grasp the magnitude of this disparity, consider that the total global cybersecurity budget is effectively lost to cybercrime every week. Ruminate upon that fact for a moment... That means more than 50 times the annual spend on cybersecurity is hemorrhaged due to poorly defended digital assets. The model is fundamentally flawed: insufficient investment paired with inadequate knowledge results in catastrophic, unsustainable losses. The lesson from NATO’s defense strategy is clear: robust security requires substantial and sustained investment. Companies must realign their priorities, significantly boosting their cybersecurity budgets and expertise. Failure to do so perpetuates a cycle of vulnerability and loss. It’s time to recognize that, like national defense, cyber defense is no longer an option but essential, demanding serious commitment and resources to safeguard our digital future.
