#Cybersecurity #Awareness Two weeks ago today, I had the privilege of presenting at the Chesterfield County Virginia Virtual Cybersecurity Summit that kicked off their annual Cybersecurity Awareness Month. With almost 300 people in attendance, I was able to share some of the latest trends and information to help county employees understand the threats and risks they and their families face in this fast-changing environment, along with best practices to keep them safe. A couple fun facts from the presentation: - CrowdStrike is monitoring and working to stop the activity of more than 230 organized cybercrime groups around the world. - Multiple foreign nations are actively working to spread disinformation about the U.S. election - Fake and hacked QR codes are on the rise as a way to lure potential victims of cybercrime. - According to Parks Associates, as of 2023, the average internet connected home in the U.S. had 17 connected devices, each of which presents a vulnerability to cybercriminals. - The importance of making sure your kids, parents, and grandparents are #cyberaware. #GSX Wrap-up As I go through my pictures from GSX, I want to give a special shoutout to Jaime P. Owens, CPP. Jaime and I met when I was the U.S. Embassy Regional Security Officer and OSAC Panama Country Council Co-Chair and Jaime was (and still is) a senior security official at the Panama Canal Authority (Canal de Panamá) But more than that, Jaime was the Senior Regional Vice President for Mexico and Central America for ASIS International and held several positions in ASIS Panama. During our time together in Panama from 2011-2014, Jaime brought me to several ASIS International events, including a visit by the ASIS President Ray O'Hara CPP ( Lifetime ) which included a #CSOCenter event hosted by none other than the illustrious Michael Gips! Jaime and Daniel Arevalo-Reategui strongly encouraged me at the time to join ASIS International and pursue my #CPP. They were instrumental in bringing the first exam to Latin America. The time was not right for me. But now, 10 years later, we have come full circle. I have joined ASIS, earned my #CPP and had the distinct pleasure of spending a small bit of time with Jaime at #GSX2024 in Orlando. Thank you Jaime for all you have done for Panamanian-U.S. relations, the #securityindustry, ASIS, and the influence you had on me. Muchas Gracias mi amigo. #headinghome Sitting in the airport, waiting for my flight to take me back to my family after a whirlwind 12 days that started in Orlando with the #WISgala as a precursor to #GSX2024 where I got to reconnect with old friends, make new ones, and have some great meetings about how my collaborators and I can add value to the industry. Several organizations asked me to record video snippets of my thoughts on #security and ways to support the #nextgen leaders. And I even got to take the stage to talk about the importance of understanding #culture with Michael Gips and Dr. Gavriel (Gav) Schneider. Then Gav and I were off to NYC and upstate NY for more meetings on ways Risk 2 Solution Group and Institute of Presilience® can add value to the U.S. market. It was also great to share meals with Melissa Agnes of the Crisis Ready Institute and other friends. Finally we travelled to DC to attend #FAIRcon2024 where we met with and learned from the top voices in #cybersecurity and #cyberrisk quantification, and during which, Gav presented both workshop and executive session on the importance of the human side of cybersecurity. Great to be with Dr. Gavriel (Gav) Schneider at FAIR Institute’s #FAIRcon2024 this week. Lots of good discussions and I heard many parallels between the conversations CROs, CSOs and CISOs about their place in the corporate structure and the need to be able to speak the language of the c-suite. Congratulations Denny Wan for his selection as the top FAIR Institute Ambassador for the Asia-Pacific Region! Congratulations to Jack Jones for his FAIR Institute lifetime achievement award! I have gotten to know Denny Wan through the Institute of Presilience® Graduate Certificate program in Organizational Resilience, Risk, and High Reliability that I help teach and I was thrilled to be able to be present at the #FAIRcon2024 gala when he received his award. This week at #FAIRcon2024 has been a great learning experience and the Factor Analysis of Information Risk that Jack conceived and built as an open standard to help the industry and the world is truly an amazing achievement. One of the things I enjoy about ASIS International #GSX is the chance to reconnect with former Diplomatic Security Service #DSS colleagues. I even remembered to be grab photos with a couple of them. #collaboration #innovation Such a great meeting with Dr. Jen Schneider and Daniel Moscoe at the RIT Certified facility in Rochester yesterday. I really enjoyed the synchronization of our backgrounds in #emergencymanagement, #riskleadership, #education, and #instructionaldesign as we explored ways we can partner to expand knowledge of Dr. Gavriel (Gav) Schneider’s Presilience concepts. Many thanks to Michael Gips and Dr. Gavriel (Gav) Schneider for inviting me to join them on the ASIS International #CareerHQ stage to talk about the importance of understanding and navigating culture. #CulturalAwareness comes in many forms: national, ethnic, linguistic, regional, corporate, departmental, etc. To be fully sucessful as security professionals, we need to be able to account for the impact cultural differences will have on the policies and processes we are designing. This take a willingness to learn, high levels of emotional intelligence, and a developed sense of curiosity. These are lessons I learned, admittedly some of them the hard way, but have served me well as I have served in 5 countries and worked in and traveled to more than 40 others.
