Bill Gates and The Insect Brigade Bill Gates, joined by his cronies at the World Economic Forum, has long been the harbinger of our insect-eating future. According to them, our traditional dietary staples—like red meat and chicken—are far too “carbon-intensive” to align with the lofty ideals of Agenda 2030 and sustainable development goals (SDGs). Thus, in a bizarre twist of fate, crickets and mealworms are being positioned as the new steak and chicken breast. https://lnkd.in/eCSPHz2i

What is the trend in meat consumption in the U.S.? (Quotes from The Good Men Project, December 30, 2023) According to recent statistics, a significant portion of the younger population in the United States, specifically those under the age of 50, have already experimented with plant-based meat alternatives. Despite the fact that it may seem like positive news, benefiting both animals and the environment, it is important to note that it only represents a minor impact on the billion-dollar conventional meat industry. Even with shifts in the variety of meat consumed, individuals residing in the U.S. continue to increase their meat consumption. ** https://lnkd.in/gr5JjdT4 **

After over 25 years in the food and nutrition industry, I’m all too familiar with the fragility of our current food system. David Wallace-Wells essay in The New York Times perfectly captures my sentiments as he paints the stark reality of the persistent “food polycrisis.” So is our food system destined to fail? Not necessarily, we have time before real problems emerge, however if we don't start working on solutions now we will have a problem. Innovation and change is needed to avoid total failure driven by the many pressures within the food system, including the declining nutritional composition of many crops. Ayana Bio’s plant cell cultivation exists to solve this exact problem through the production of affordable, nutrient-dense plant cell ingredients that bypass the natural limits of agriculture. Yet with a multitude of intersecting problems plaguing the food system – inflation, climate change, hunger, and ecosystem threats – a bundle of innovations in agricultural and food technologies is also needed to develop a comprehensive toolbox for building a stable and secure food supply. The global food crisis will only get more complicated over time but I am hopeful with increased collaborative industry action we’ll achieve a resilient, nutritious, and sustainable future for generations to come. https://lnkd.in/g9Ezre_B #FoodTech #PlantCell #ClimateChange #FutureOfFood #Agriculture

(USA 28.07.24) Opinion - Food as You Know It Is About to Change. The article discusses the fragility of the global food system, increasingly threatened by climate change, economic instability and rising food prices. While the food supply appears stable, it is vulnerable to disruptions from pandemics, conflicts, and climate impacts, leading to a "food polycrisis." Global hunger has stagnated, with undernourishment rising by 21% since 2017. Wholesale food prices have surged about 50% since 1999, and U.S. grocery prices have increased nearly 21% since President Biden took office. Agricultural yields are failing to keep pace with demand, with climate change reducing productivity growth by 30-35%, and projections indicate significant declines in staple crop yields by 2050. Food scarcity is causing unprecedented displacement, with 282 million people facing hunger in 59 countries. The article calls for strategic interventions, such as a food reserve, to mitigate shortages and emphasizes the need for increased investment in agricultural research to enhance productivity and address the interconnected challenges of hunger, ecosystem degradation, and climate change. Overall, it highlights the urgent need for systemic changes in the food supply chain to ensure food security and sustainability. https://lnkd.in/gpBNkpFX

Are you a fan of chocolate, coffee, tea, or avocados? How about peanuts, honey, or maple syrup? Because without fast action at scale, we won't be enjoying those much longer. Looking at our future includes "almost certainly, more disruptions and more hazards, enough to remake the whole future of food." We are facing rising hunger and prices, increasing obesity, lower rates of nutrients, increasing obesity, failing farms... and an agriculture system that makes up 1/4 - 1/3 of global carbon emissions. We need to throw the kitchen sink at our food system, making use of all innovations, tools, and interventions if we want a system that can sustain us, and the planet, for the future. https://lnkd.in/eFPsdjBy https://lnkd.in/esqpSPCY

The sustainable development goal (SDG 2, Zero Hunger) aims to end hunger, ensure food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture by 2030. Food Security means all people at all times have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their food preference. How well has the nation ensured access to sufficient and nutritious food? Are we food secure? #NOIPollsPolicyDialogue #SecureOurFoods #HungerIsAnger

People in Germany want to see more plant-based food! A survey, conducted by the YouGov Institute in Germany, revealed interesting results in terms of the attitudes towards plant-based alternatives. They found out, that: ❌ 58% think people in Germany overeat meat ↘️ 46% want to eat less of it 🌍 49% acknowledge that animal-based foods have detrimental effects on climate and environment 🌱 49% see a need for more plant-based alternatives This was particularly supported by people who considered themselves as flexitarians, vegetarians or vegans and within the younger subgroup (>35 years). Furthermore, the study participants agreed that farmers should be supported within the transition to produce plant-based foods, that public catering should provide more plant-based alternatives, that we need more research and that the VAT rate should be adjusted to the animal-based equivalents. This would make it easier and more attractive to access plant-based alternatives and therefore contribute to the protein transition towards more sustainable and healthy options. What do you think about these findings? And what are your thoughts on plant-based alternatives? About the study: The results are based on an online survey conducted by YouGov Deutschland GmbH with a representative sample of 2105 participants in February 2024. #PlantBasedAlternatives #NutritionMatters #Sustainability #Survey #ProteinTransition
