Cracking morning catching up and exploring options to improve operations and planning. If you like this kind of thing consider following Pincheck Ltd and let me know what you’d like to see or how we could work together.
A lovely visit this morning to meet a former counterpart, Rob Preston, at the beautifully kept St Edmund's College, Cambridge to catch up and talk all things operational, resilience, and how to “get things done”.
Hugely enjoyable, and I’d absolutely do it some more. Not limited to Cambridge, if you’d like a chat on similar themes, let me know.
A big thank you also to Jack from the college maintenance team who found my parking space after I missed it (!)
Onboarding is more than just an airport pick-up and a team photo—it's the foundation for success.
Welcoming new team members effectively at DGPS is crucial in setting the tone for their journey within the organisation. A strong onboarding process helps our new staff feel valued, connected, and confident from day one.
When new staff understand their role and how they contribute to #learningtogethergrowingtogether and the bigger DGPS picture, they’re already engaged and motivated and feel supported and appreciated. Clear expectations and early guidance enable new staff to hit the ground running, leading to quicker and more impactful teaching and learning. It is the perfect opportunity to immerse new teachers and staff in the school's culture, ensuring they feel a sense of belonging.
Onboarding isn’t just a one-time event—it’s an ongoing process that fosters growth, learning, and connection. Investing in this process benefits the new staff and the entire organisation, building a team that learns and grows together. We've also learned from our HR data that a positive onboarding experience significantly reduces turnover #DGPS#Onboarding#EmployeeExperience#TeamSuccessCharlotte McCombsElizabeth McMath

With this week's release of the Boston Public Schools Long-Term Facilities Plan, it is important to consider the fine points of implementation early and often. Touring the Joe Louis Greenway in Detroit at the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals (APBP) conference last week. This project is a master class in creating an authentic, reciprocal relationship with community that's based in mutual respect. When community needs are centered on a project like this, there's a tangible sense of care when walking the trail. Kudos to Christina Peltier and everyone at the City of Detroit and SmithGroup who made this a reality, including colleagues from Toole Design Group :). And thank you for organizing a wonderful tour, Christina! It was an honor to meet Miss Williams, Miss Pickens, and Mr Rio and witness their testimony about how much this greenway means to them.
Can't wait to visit Detroit again.
🚆 Full speed ahead! The Sepulveda Transit Corridor project in Los Angeles has successfully completed the PDA Phase 3 design, meeting all deliverables and bringing us closer to a transit solution for Angelenos. This monumental project is set to offer faster, greener travel options for the LA community.
We're particularly excited about the UCLA stop, which is expected to become the biggest hub of ridership, especially near the campus's medical center. Imagine traveling from the San Fernando Valley to the Westside of Los Angeles in just 20 minutes!?👏
Together with our partners, Meridiam and American Triple I, #Bechtel is committed to developing a world-class rail line that connects our community through being active participants in local areas, creating jobs, providing training opportunities, and partnering with local suppliers and businesses. We are driven by the positive impact this project will have on so many lives.

This is me choking up at the end of my speech during the groundbreaking for the new Norwalk High School. I got emotional because three seniors Christian Pierre & Kiera Cunniffe, Norwalk High School students and Aaron Charles, from P-TECH spoke before me about how happy they are for the new school and the opportunities their peers will have who will follow them.
It would be easy to keep the status quo. We have great teachers, administrators and staff who persevere and demand excellence despite the challenges of a 1971 learning facility. We have awesome students who work hard and succeed despite leaks, cold and hot rooms, unusable courtyards, a library that is so functionally out of date that some of the middle schools are better equipped and a cafeteria that can't keep up with the student population. Let alone the security challenges that I won't go into.
There's a pool with air quality problems, locker rooms that are not ADA compliant and bathrooms on all floors with plumbing encased in concrete, making it virtually impossible to repair or update. If we were not here today at this groundbreaking, the City of Norwalk and the State of Connecticut would need to invest $20 million dollars at a minimum to maintain the status quo.
That would still leave us with a third-rate auditorium, a gymnasium with mold and termite damage, classrooms without elevator access and a substandard physical plant. The worst part – after tens of millions of dollars, the money invested would be invisible. Barely any of the work would be noticed.
That's why it's time for a new school.
