On 29 August 2024, Ciarb (East Asia Branch) had the pleasure of having the Hon. Geoffrey Ma, former Chief Justice of the HKCFA and current arbitrator/mediator, for a fireside chat. The theme of the talk was "critical importance of arbitration in Hong Kong and its future”. During the fireside chat, Mr Ma answered various questions, which were moderated and delivered by our own Committee Member Jennifer Wu, on various topics ranging from the role of arbitration in the administration of justice to how to effectively manage arbitral disputes. A big thank you to Jennifer Wu for moderating and our events team for their their tireless effort organising events. The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) is a big supporter of diversity and have organised many events to improve diversity and inclusivity in the areas of ADR. Ciarb (East Asia Branch) has invited Dr Eva Litina, PhD, FCIArb to give a talk on "Diversity in Maritime Arbitration". In the spirit of inclusivity, the talk will be open to everyone including non-members. This webinar will focus on diversity in the particular context of maritime arbitration and the available data on arbitrator appointments and diversity relating to the most popular maritime arbitration seats. It will identify the key barriers to being appointed as arbitrator, with a specific focus on maritime arbitration. Based on the data, this webinar will discuss the role of maritime arbitration associations, as well as initiatives to promote diversity and inclusion in maritime arbitration.
