From the #clinicaltrial trenches: An inappropriate, #protocol mandated, treatment unblinding. Imagine that. Set up. Two dose levels. Two vials will be provided for each patient for each treatment visit. Both vials will contain placebo for placebo patients. One vial will have active drug for drug-treatment arm patients. One cc from vial A, two cc from vial B, sequentially injected into one arm or the other but the same arm for each and roughly at the same site. Patients on the lower dose level receive active from vial A (vial B is placebo). Patients on the higher dose receive active drug from vial B (vial A is placebo). The same region for each arm because an injection site reaction would likely result in unblinding. Sting. Injections on the abdomen may be on the same side but preferably the injections should be given on opposite sides. It was an amazing experience to present (remotely) at #APASL 2024 - our interim results to develop a non-invasive tool using routine clinical investigations to support identifying healthy research participants with underlaying #MASLD. In the rare disease world, it is a given that patients must fight battles because the state does not. The state does not undertake drug development efforts for rare diseases. It does not mandate reasonable pricing for extortionist drug prices. It does not ensure that insurance is not denied to people with rare diseases who have high medical expenses. It does not actively encourage scientific research that can make more rare diseases treatable. This piece discusses the critical issue of the state's role in making #pharma more accountable rather than pushing patients to do so. #raredisease #healthcare #accesstomedicine

👏The Bonnell Foundation Nailed it again! Michigan's PDAB is setting up rapidly. "Healthcare costs are of course something that impacts everyone- but so is disease. Lawmakers need to find an approach that doesn't put the future of so many potential treatments, and the hope of patients, at risk." -Laura Bonnell We couldn't agree more with this statement. Our government, while faced with huge challenges in lowering prescription costs, is putting our lives at risk. In Colorado they didn't deem Trikafta unaffordable, because they saw the risk that was being taken. They admitted to the fact that it was too large to take on without potentially sacrificing CF patient's access in Colorado. Especially due to the fact that we currently have access. Everytime we asked for some sort of protection while they were in negotiations with the makers of our medication, they couldn't give it. Not for lack of wanting to, but it was literally not on the table. There was no way to guarantee our safety. There are so many more advancements coming down the line for everyone in the CF community. We have to protect all patients.
