⚽ Club Football Governance - Evolution of #MultiClubOwnership ⚽ As natural consequence of the growth of the #MCO model, an increasing number of clubs across Europe is falling under the control of the biggest (or wealthiest) sides from the continent. A total of 27 European clubs are now controlled by (or under the significant influence of) #PremierLeague club owners. The number has more than tripled since the pre-pandemic period. #footballgovernance #clubownership CIES - International Centre for Sports Studies

UEFA's MCO rules face a test ahead of the 2024/25 season, with a new alternative allowing clubs to comply through the use of blind trusts. This exceptional measure enabled ⚽ Girona FC ⚽ Manchester City FC ⚽ Manchester United FC and ⚽ OGC Nice to participate in UEFA competitions. However, this solution is temporary, with shares reverting to investors by July 2025. As UEFA seeks a sustainable approach to balance integrity and the growing MCO trend, we anticipate tighter regulations for the 2025/26 season. 🔵 City Football Group (CFG) who owns multiple clubs, including Girona FC and Manchester City FC, will need to reduce its stake in one of the two clubs if they want both to participate in the Champions League next season. 🤝 UEFA has presented the investment group with 2 options that would enable both sides to participate in next season’s UCL: 🔹 CFG can either transfer all shares in either Man City or Girona to an independent trust managed by a panel appointed by UEFA. 🔹 CFG can also sell shares to a separate third party that reduces one ownership stake to below 30%. The investment group currently owns 100% of Man City and 47% of Girona. ⏳ CFG must comply by June 3 to avoid possible penalties, which include one club being put into the Europa League. #mancity #girona #cityfootballgroup #football #uefa

Can The Championship become Europe's second biggest league...? It has plenty going for it; great stadiums, fan base, direct association with the EPL and strong competition. US investors seem to think it is heading in the right direction. But the difference maker may be the global appeal of the clubs reguarly playing in the league. "Leeds Utd" for example, are searched more in Ireland and South Africa than they are in the UK. The amount of teams with higher search volume outside their home country are few and far between, even in Europe's biggest leagues. Generally this is something only achieved by the biggest football team brands.... Perhaps more telling still, the UK only contributes 13% of total earches for this term, "Leeds Utd" . #TheChampionship #Football #Sportsmedia #SEO

MY ARTICLE ON NEW MULTI-CLUB OWNERSHIP RULES 💎 I am excited to share the publication of my latest article, now featured on FootballClub_cz. The article dives into UEFA's updated rules on multi-club ownership effective from May 1, 2024. These adjustments are crucial as they address the balance between investor interests and the competitive fairness of European competitions. The article provides information which clubs can participate in which European cup competitions if multiple clubs under the same ownership qualify. It discusses the selection criteria based on their league positions, the prestige of the competition, and the rankings of their national associations. This is particularly relevant for clubs like Sparta Prague and West Ham United, or Manchester City and Girona, navigating through these new regulations. ⚽️🙏⚖️ #law #football #UEFA #FootballGovernance #MultiClubOwnership

In light of the recent news surrounding a new Welsh League Cup competition, my Howard Kennedy LLP colleague Joel Leigh and I have explored the proposal in the article below, which aims to create a direct pathway to European football for participating clubs. The initiative is currently under review, with legal and regulatory considerations being carefully examined to ensure compliance with both national and international football governing bodies. #WelshFootball #WelshCupProposal #EuropeanFootball #FootballRegulations #SportsLaw #Regulation #Football #FootballAssociation #PremierLeague #Sponsorship #Broadcasting #Advertising #Governance #Compliance #UEFA #FA #Sport #Football #Soccer #DataProtection #IntellectualProperty #HealthandSafety #Revenue #Financial

The City Football Group (CFG), a holding company predominantly owned by the Abu Dhabi United Group with an 81% majority stake, oversees various association football clubs, including Manchester City, New York City FC, Melbourne City FC, and Girona FC. However, the UEFA league regulations, particularly Article 5 concerning the integrity of the competition and multi-club ownership, pose a significant challenge for CFG. According to Article 5 of the UEFA regulations, "No club participating in a UEFA club competition may, either directly or indirectly, hold or deal in the securities or shares of any other club participating in a UEFA club competition." As both Manchester City and Girona FC have qualified for the competition, CFG may find itself in a dilemma as it currently holds stakes in both clubs. This situation raises questions about CFG's foresight and strategic planning. It is plausible that when CFG initially acquired Girona FC, they did not anticipate the club qualifying for the prestigious UEFA club competition. As a result, CFG may now face pressure to divest its stake in Girona FC to comply with UEFA regulations and uphold the integrity of the competition. In hindsight, CFG may need to reassess its approach to multi-club ownership and consider potential conflicts or regulatory issues that could arise in the future. This situation highlights the complexities and challenges associated with managing multiple football clubs under one umbrella organization, particularly in the highly regulated environment of European football competitions. #cityfootballgroup #UEFA #Manchestercityfc #Gironafc

This is HUGE news! As much as I believe that the move to professionalization is needed to move the sport forward, the lack of clubs within certain areas/regions is concerning. As someone who is involved in netball in Scotland, I fear this could have huge implications. Not only at an elite level, but particularly at grassroots, through player pathways, and for umpires and coaches. I am excited to see what the new era of netball brings, however I do hope there are plans in the near future to ensure that the Super League is accessible for and representative of the whole of the UK (including Scotland, NI, the South West, etc). #NetballSuperLeague #SportDevelopment
