📚 From the CIFOR-ICRAF library | Dietary transitions in Indonesia: the case of urban, rural, and forested areas This study reveals a major dietary shift across urban, rural, and forested areas, with rising consumption of processed foods, sugar-sweetened drinks, and wheat—while traditional, locally sourced foods decline. Urban areas and high tree cover loss regions show the fastest shift, with decreasing dietary diversity and increased reliance on ultra-processed foods. As diets modernize, policies must balance convenience with health and sustainability. 📖 Read the full publication: 🔗 https://bit.ly/4aD4KVc

Thrilled to share that our paper ‘Sustainability and cost of typical and heart-healthy dietary patterns in Australia’ got published in the American Heart Journal Plus! 🎉 The paper delved into the environmental cost and financial cost of a Heart-healthy Australian Diet (HAD) and a Typical Australian Diet (TAD). Both diets consisted mainly of convenience food and ready-meals. —> While the HAD had a 23.8% lower environmental footprint compared to the TAD, the HAD was 51% more expensive. This research has profound implications for menu planning and for individuals looking to lower their carbon footprint while adhering to heart-healthy guidelines. I hope these insights contribute to ongoing discussions about sustainable and affordable dietary choices. Special thanks to Jordan Stanford, Clare Collins, Tamara Bucher and Karen Charlton! Addressing the issue of 2 billion people lacking access to a healthy diet requires a multifaceted approach that involves governments, international organizations, local communities, and individuals. We need to: - Invest in sustainable agriculture practices - Support small-scale farmers - Improve food storage and distribution infrastructure - Promote nutrition education - Address poverty and inequality It requires a coordinated effort to ensure everyone has access to nutritious food, particularly in Africa and South Asia. We must prioritize this issue to build a healthier and more equitable world.
“Our research estimates that more than 2 billion people, many of them in Africa and South Asia, cannot afford a healthy diet.” Learn why #FoodSystems transformation is critical for #ZeroHunger in International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)’s 2024 Global Food Policy Report (GFPR) 👇 https://bit.ly/3L1E3xz

EAT-Lancet dietary recommendations for sustainability and health need to be culturally sensitive. NISD Director, Professor Nitya Rao is a member of the EAT-Lancet Commission 2.0. The commission aims to correct the limitations of the EAT-Lancet diet 1.0 by taking issues of food justice and regional and cultural diversity in eating habits into account. Professor Rao is a co-author of a new NISD study that points to limitations to the EAT-Lancet reference diet 1.0, a highly influential science-based set of dietary guidelines that meet the requirements both of human health and environmental sustainability. The study analyses the eating habits of the Santal tribe, a people living in eastern India. Nutritional analyses were conducted by UK and Indian researchers, including local Santal youth. The Santal’s people’s diets were found to be both healthy and environmentally sustainable. Importantly, the Santal people’s diets deviated substantially from the EAT-Lancet reference diet in other respects, despite their human and planetary health credentials. For example, while the EAT-Lancet dietary guidelines prescribe some meat and dairy consumption, the Santal abstain from these, obtaining their protein largely from plant-based sources. Professor Jessica Fanzo, Director of the Food for Humanity Initiative, is also on the EAT-Lancet Commission 2.0. The NISD is privileged to host Professor Fanzo delivering its JOHN INNES FOUNDATION annual lecture on Wednesday, 15 May, on the importance of data and evidence in scrutinising food systems. In November 2023, we conducted a comprehensive audit of nearly 800 bread products across Sydney supermarkets, diving deep into category changes, nutritional insights, and emerging trends. Here are some key trends we found: 🥖 Plant-Based Claims: Almost half of all bread products now showcase plant-based claims, reflecting Australia's growing trend of #plantbased diets. 🌱 Gut Health: While overall gut health claims have decreased on packaging, dietary fibre claims have surged, appearing on over one-third of products. Calling out naturally prebiotic ingredients like The Healthy Grain's #BARLEYMAX are also becoming increasingly popular. 🍞 Natural & Artisanal: Despite rising living costs, premium bread varieties are on the rise. ♻️ Sustainability: Sustainability claims are increasing, with more brands highlighting eco-friendly practices and upcycled ingredients to combat food waste. Breakfast cereals provide a valuable contribution to a plant-based and balanced diet, addressing dietary fibre and whole grain gaps while supporting more sustainable food systems. Yet, they represent only one part of the puzzle. Achieving impactful change towards sustainable and healthy dietary choices requires coordinated and collective action – from seed to spoon and from public and private actors. #ceereal#theparliamentmagazine Check this out to learn more and access to useful references 👉 https://lnkd.in/ehPqg5kT

A new study suggests that region-specific diets can help improve people's diets in China and take care of the planet at the same time. These diets would meet people's nutritional needs and promote healthy eating without forcing them to ditch cultural foods or practices. They also have the potential to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging the production of locally grown ingredients. Creating products that cater to these dietary models isn't just a great opportunity for brands to gain a foothold in China; the rest of the world could also benefit from this approach, creating a chance to transform the world's health. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/edYmESyN #HealthyEating #Sustainability #PrinovaGlobal
