The news of Body Shop administration in the UK is hitting hard. What started as an endearing tale of a business founded in 1976 by Anita Roddick - a creative woman making skincare remedies in her kitchen, became a household name. Acquired by L'Oreal in 2006, it has become a high street staple. Now, in 2024, we know that Aurelius, the German company that bought The Body Shop for £207m in November 2023, said it had been unable to revive the fortunes of the business after dismal trading over Christmas and new year. But there's a lesson on business to be learned from Body Shop. Take a moment to reflect on their ethical business practices, #ForeverAgainstAnimalTesting and community fair trade. In a world where customers want to know the heart behind the brand, Body Shop was a pioneer. Body Shop showed us that business wasn't just about making profit, but also about setting a conscious example and having a positive impact on people and the planet. So, while we mourn (what may become the end of an era), let's not forget the importance of responsible business practices, making ethical choices and placing people and the planet at the forefront of our pursuits. It may be that the core ethical principles of this brand may become it's saviour.

Meet the CEO of venerable British brand Fortnum & Mason, Tom Athron. Athron meets with Spear's Editor-in-Chief Edwin Smith to talk about his vision for the business and how he balances the history of the 316-year-old brand while tapping into its unrealised potential. Central to the business's success is customer service, Athron says. He tells Spear's of a customer complaint he received about one of Fortnum’s flagship products, its piccalilli, saying it was too sweet and the chunks of fruit were too small. ‘The buyers took it away and decided, actually, he was right.’ They reformulated the recipe and sent the customer a jar of the new version to try (along with six scotch eggs). ‘He could not believe that we took his feedback that seriously,’ says Athron. ‘But we’re a small enough business that if people email me directly I will always respond.’ Click the link below to read the full article.

The Body Shop was once a symbol of ethical business practices, but now it's in administration. Despite being sold numerous times, it seems that the buyers were never the right fit for the company. The Body Shop was founded on principles that went beyond money, but the succession of buyers seemed to only looked at the numbers. This is a reminder to all business owners to consider what will happen to their business after they're gone. #exitplanning #successionplanning

Good business is sexy to me! I get a buzz when someone calls me and says they weren’t sure who could help them but they’ve seen that KOA focuses on service based businesses and wanted to call us. They think because their service isn’t sexy ‘aka the latest boutique Gin co’ that we won’t want to work with them - it’s simply not the case #koadigital Beauty is in the eye of the beholder 🥰💃🏻 #business2business
