Enjoyed serving as a panelist at yesterday's Federal Communications Bar Association CLE entitled: "The NG911 Transition: The FCC’s Nationwide Framework." The attached is a high-level summary of how the FCC's order aligns with APCO's positions and further steps that are needed to improve interoperability for the benefit of emergency communications centers (ECCs). The FCC's order addresses one part of NG9-1-1: getting requests for emergency assistance delivered to ECCs in an IP-based format. As I mentioned, reaching full NG9-1-1 consistent with the FCC's definition (which in turn is consistent with the public safety community's vision for end-to-end NG9-1-1 functionality) would involve, no matter what stage any state or region is at, the following: - Advancing from voice/text to a variety of multimedia inputs. - Extending capabilities beyond ESInets to the technologies that will be needed inside ECCs to process new forms of communication plus share this information with other ECCs and field responders. - Achieving full interoperability. - Training for 9-1-1 professionals. - Cybersecurity.
