Our Medical Director Dr Israel Iroezindu was a key note presenter at The Hyperbaric Medical Practitioners Society of Nigeria(HMPSN) annual general meeting. He spoke on "Exploring Dive and Hyperbaric Medicine In Nigeria:Unlocking the Depth of Safety and Excellence" in His Speech, Dr Israel Iroezindu identified and proferred solutions to the following challenges encountered in Dive medical practice in Nigeria: 1. Human capacity training and expertise limitation 2.Inadequate infrastructure and dive medical emergency response capabilities 3.Limited risk awareness or consciousness amongst divers population 4. Need to establish a robust domesticated dive medical standard and certificate verification system 5. Regulatory framework enforcement 6. Research data collection and need for collaboration 7. Inadequate funding and underestimation of Hyperbaric Medicine needs 8. Lack of rehabilitation program for ailing divers.

In light of the Expanded Scope of Practice for pharmacists in Canada, I would like to highlight the conclusion of the paper that I published with Bashir Elgizoli in the Journal of Pharmacy Practice and Research in 2016. The paper entitled “Exploring self-perception of community pharmacists of their professional identity, capabilities, and role expansion” concluded that continuous educational programs are needed for community pharmacists in Sudan. That role expansion will allow for better self-perception and better professional contribution in healthcare. This indicates the need for applying an Expanded Scope of Practice in developing countries such as Sudan through a combination of educational and regulatory approaches. “Otu onye ọkụkọ ka ọ bụrụ na ọ ga-eme n’ala, ọ bụrụna ọ ga-eme n’isi”. This Igbo proverb reflects one of the key principles that drives my decision-making process as a doctor. Simply translated, it states “A dead body is like a log of wood until it belongs to you”. This was one of my slides yesterday when I had the privilege of sharing my thoughts as the speaker at the OGM of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (LUTH chapter) on the theme "In the Patient's Shoes - impact of patient centered care on medical decision making". Until healthcare providers can grasp the reality of the burden of ill-health on a patient, our views of decision making will not be patient-centered. It does not mean good clinical outcomes will not occur, but the key stakeholder in the process will simply feel and be seen as just another data or subject matter. A state no one deserves to be in. Amazing initiatives like #hellomynameis, co-founded by late Dr Kate Granger have helped to highlight the shock healthcare workers face when they experience the healthcare process as patients. We simply can't believe what the world is like in the patient's shoes. Truly, the log of wood is easier to carry when it is not your responsibility. The simple act of just introducing yourself to a patient at the beginning of every first patient contact goes a long way to initially calm otherwise anxious patients; helping them go through the rest of the process with confidence in the decisions of the health care team. This is always a simple but profound piece to place down in bid to solve the puzzle of patient centered care. #patientcenteredcare #qualtyimprovement #MDCAN #hellomynameis

It's time that serious consideration be given to the market for prescribed substances that are addictive and have the capacity for recreational abuse. How has the demand for these substances impacted the psychiatric workforce? How has the prescription of cannabis to a million Australians impacted productivity? Has there been any reduction (or increase) in the incidence of mental health conditions that must be diagnosed in order to access otherwise illicit substances? What are the overall impacts of our prescribing patterns for cannabis, ketamine, benzodiazepines, amphetamines, Ecstasy, psilocybin etc...? We cannot make meaningful progress on addressing the supply of psychiatric services until we address pharma-driven changes to the diagnosis and management of mental health care. The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) ought not be focussed on the supply of Vyvanse and instead turn its attention as to why it is in such high demand.
