In a time of such unease and turmoil, I love this inspirational and factual TED Talk about a superpower's superpower (hint: it's immigration). Check it out!
“We welcome immigrants not because they are American, but because we are American.” Global Refuge President and CEO, Krish O'Mara Vignarajah, recently delivered her first Ted Talk! Watch as she shares her story and the story of this nation’s legacy of welcome. Immigration is an American superpower. Throughout American history, newcomers have contributed an incredible amount to this nation’s success. With so many challenges ahead, we need to embrace that superpower. We need an effective immigration system so that those who want to come here have a legal path to build a better life for their families, their new communities, and all who call this nation home. 1 - Daniela Alba Emirates: Redefining Resilience and Self Discovery towards Advocacy https://lnkd.in/gfgE3Fgb ➡️ For our first episode, let’s welcome Daniela Alba Ramirez. Daniela is a resilient force for change, originally from Bogota, Colombia, and currently serving as a Donor Relations Coordinator at the Jesuit Refugee Service. Rooted in her own family heritage and lived experiences of forced displacement, Daniela views her work not merely as a career, but as a profound calling to foster sustainable change within communities. 🌎 Daniela shares the story of her own immigration experience as a Colombian immigrant, addressing misconceptions and challenges faced by Latin American immigrants. Highlighting the necessity of holding oppressive systems accountable for collective liberation, she emphasizes that migration is a reality, not a crisis; migration is a spectrum, and many of us move within it several times during our lives. 💬 The conversation explores themes of identity, education, and immigration, detailing the journey of self-discovery and growth. This episode examines immigration perspectives and policies in both the United States and Italy, explores philosophy and how to decolonize our own perspective, and examines how our personal, intellectual, and professional work can be combined to address immigration issues.

At The Migration Collective, we're deeply committed to understanding and addressing the complexities of migration. Through meticulous research and engagement, we're unraveling the intricate tapestry of migration, exploring the nuances that shape each journey. By embracing the concept of betweenness, we aim to comprehend the intersections and connections within migration dynamics. Our efforts extend beyond surface-level understanding, as we seek to uncover the underlying textures and realities that define the migrant experience. Through this lens, we're better equipped to advocate for inclusive policies and provide meaningful support to asylum seekers and migrants. Join us in our mission to foster empathy, promote understanding, and champion the rights of all individuals navigating the migration process. #MigrationResearch #MigrationStudies #AsylumSeekers #Betweenness #MigrationPolicy #MigrationAdvocacy #HumanRights

"As capacity restrictions and time limits at shelters intensify, advocates say they’re scrambling to pick up the slack to keep migrant families safe — often without adequate resources." https://lnkd.in/gqDPvwNS “To meet the worldwide migration challenges of the 21st century, we need the federal government to work in partnership with states and localities to humanely and efficiently receive noncitizens who arrive after traversing oceans, harsh landscapes, and dangerous situations in the hopes of joining the fabric of America,” said Jennifer Ibañez Whitlock, Supervisory Policy & Practice Counsel at the American Immigration Lawyers Association. “[The Destination Reception Assistance Act] is a sensible solution to addressing the economic realities of certain costs currently borne by cities and states and sets them up to benefit from the long-term contributions we know that immigrants inevitably provide to receiving communities. When we invest in our shared future, we make America stronger.” READ more here: https://lnkd.in/debdNgYX
