A tale of innovation ignored. 🚫📺 3. **Kodak** 📸 - the pioneer in photography failed to capitalize on the digital photo revolution, leading to a 2012 bankruptcy. It no longer pays to think inside the box. Remember the days when you were in the supermarket or drugstore and you could easily pick up a movie at a Redbox kiosk? Those days are over as Redbox shuts down in yet another sign that physical media is fading into the sunset. Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment liquidates. Redbox’s network of 24,000 DVD rental kiosks and its streaming services are being sold off for parts. The end was coming, of course, since the streaming 'we don't own anything' era began with Redbox’s business in decline for more than a decade. At its height, Redbox had more than 43,000 kiosks in the U.S. and Canada stocked with movies, TV shows and games. DVDs are DOA. Like the extinction of neighborhood video rental stores, it was only earlier this year that Best Buy phased out sales of DVDs and Blu-ray discs both in-store and online. All of this is a sad reminder that with progress often comes hard changes. Gone are the days of being lost in your thoughts walking down and perusing aisles of DVDs or going through bargain bins looking for classics. Nothing gets me more excited than the birth of a new franchise. Five Nights at Freddy’s had a gargantuan success story this weekend, to many people’s surprise. If you were aware of the huge fandom for the video game title, the movie’s success may not be much of a shock to you. Lets see how this breaks down: Five Nights at Freddy’s  - $80 Million domestic box office opening - $130 Million Globally - Biggest Halloween weekend opening ever - 3rd biggest horror debut of all time - 2nd biggest opening for a video game movie, behind 2023's Super Mario Bros - 81% of audience is between the ages of 13 and 25  - Best opening for Blumhouse When I was working with YouTube Creators at Frederator Networks, Inc., I became aware of this fan base. They almost make up a vertical on YouTube all its own. Just like other IP fan bases like Pokemon, or Super Mario, the FNAF fandom is satiated by a never ending stream of content development not by the video game publisher, but by content creators on YouTube. The videos these creators produce are wide ranging and leave the realm of just video game walkthroughs, and can go deeper into the lore of the IP, original music, and even animation. FNAF has also spawned a ton of reaction videos with creators brave enough to share their reactions playing the horror title. It's no surprise the theatrical performed so well with a community this massive. With this in mind, Universal Pictures should be primed to develop this even further, because the audience is already there; and they are hungry for more. If other studios want to capitalize on this trend, they should also begin mining for established (and dedicated) IP fanbases on platforms like YouTube and Reddit, Inc. to acquire and build. They should also keep the original creators in the picture while paying homage to the original fans and creators that kept the community thriving. FNAF did this and it shows in the numbers. They are the ones who will use their dollars and show up for you. That being said, I can’t wait until NBCUniversal extends FNAF to other parts of their company, like theme parks. This IP has franchise potential written all over it, and I’m excited to see more!

How: Take your audience on a virtual tour of the last Blockbuster store's iconic memorabilia, share interviews with staff, and showcase the enduring spirit of a brand that refused to fade away.
