During the last fifteen years, UPMC has treated more than 1,200 cases of thoracic #aortic dissections (TAD) and is one of the leading research centers in the U.S. studying the pathophysiology of the disorder while also publishing on its institutional outcomes, notably on the role malperfusion syndrome plays in TAD and how to optimally manage patient care. Ibrahim Sultan, MD, FACS, FACC, further discusses some of the insights, treatment approaches, and research learnings from UPMC in caring for patients with TAD in this new article: https://lnkd.in/eyVhMzDF

Hyungbae Kwon, Ph.D., and colleagues have successfully used optogenetics to artificially reactivate a spatial-memory, prompting shelter-seeking behavior in mice without the original threatening stimuli that were present during the formation of the memory circuit. Their study advances our understanding of mammalian spatial-memory structure and formation. “If we understand the macro-level structure of memory, then we may be able to develop more effective strategies to prevent or slow down neurodegenerative diseases using this method,” says Hyungbae Kwon, Ph.D. Full article: https://lnkd.in/gvwbZfuQ Johns Hopkins Medicine The Johns Hopkins University

Much deeply thoughtful and studied science around the chemistry, physiology and the psychology of pain. There are some wonderful and promising research at the 2nd Annual NIH HEAL symposium here at the Maryland Gaylord Convention Center. After many years of research, it is still a challenging area of human experience to try to put a finger on safer solutions for pain. Yet, sometimes complex problems can be answered with simple solutions. That is the goal of H3Pelvic Therapy Systems, providing better, safer, and much more dignified patient improving outcomes. H3Pelvic, bringing dignity back to healthcare and giving chronic pelvic pain victims renewed hope.

In this webinar, I had the chance to address several frequently asked patient inquiries about atrial fibrillation. We discussed heart rhythm monitoring, left atrial appendage occlusion as a potential strategy for lowering stroke risk in certain patients, explored the influence of the autonomic nervous system on the development of atrial fibrillation, and covered the importance of lifestyle changes. Our recent research, titled "Exploring the Underlying Mechanisms of Ischemic Heart Disease Post-Stroke: Insights from a 2-Year Follow-Up Investigation," has been published in the Annals of Gerontology and Geriatric Research! This paper addresses a critical gap in current research by extending the temporal scope of risk prediction models, emphasizing the importance of considering a 2-year follow-up period for patients with ischemic stroke in the ICU. The utilization of machine learning techniques underscores a commitment to innovative and data-driven approaches in healthcare, with the ultimate goal of improving patient outcomes and refining clinical decision-making in this specific medical context. A heartfelt thank you to the dedicated team, collaborators, and everyone involved in making this research a reality. Your contributions are invaluable! 📚 Read the Full Paper https://lnkd.in/gEmHGJTh #Research #Cardiology #Geriatrics #Stroke #HeartDisease #AcademicPublishing #MedicalResearch #Science #HealthInsights

Rehabilitation interventions are complex and studying their effectiveness is methodologically challenging. In our new paper in the European Journal of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (part of a series from Cochrane Rehabilitation), we offer an alternative to the randomized control trial when it cannot be conducted. We discuss how the Target Trial Emulation framework can be used to study the effectiveness of rehabilitation interventions. https://lnkd.in/gvhVQkBr

#CysticFibrosis is a debilitating and devastating #respiratory disease. One of the leading lights in #CF research is Prof. David Sheppard’s lab at the University of Bristol. The Sheppard lab recently published seminal research characterizing the reduced chloride conductance in two rare #CFTR mutant channels (S1159F and S1159P) that lead to cystic fibrosis. Reflecting on this study in the context of the great advances in CF, Prof. Sheppard notes: “𝘈𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 Cystic Fibrosis Trust 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘴 𝘪𝘵𝘴 60𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘢𝘳𝘺, 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘤𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘧𝘪𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘴.
