The concept of what is "cool", "fun" and "enjoyable" needs to change if we want a radical paradigm shift in our ways of living. Still today, the attractive activities people dream of doing are associated with high energy consumption: traveling long distances to exotic places, skiing in huge ski resorts, riding jetskis and snowmobiles (at least where I live in the US), going on cruises in massive floating hotels... . A new ski resort opened in the Italian Alps. The particularity of this ski resort is that it has NO ski lifts. A first in Europe. Some itineraries to skin up the mountain are setup and skiers enjoy their way down as they want. . It's, for me, a step in the right direction. Changing the way we live and our addiction to "unlimited" energy consumption will come with a profound culture shift and the redefinition of what we value.

"91% of European ski stations are 'threatened' by the current speed of climate change." The French newspaper Libération published an article yesterday about a study on the future of ski stations in Europe, which was published in the scientific journal Nature Climate Change. This article reminded me of previous articles and the work of Ouishare discussing the future of these ski stations. Some ski stations have already begun to contemplate their future, as skiing is no longer feasible. In the study published in Nature Climate Change, they mention that 93% of the ski stations in the French Alps will be in "danger". This is a subject I find quite interesting. Instead of destroying habitats by reshaping mountains to create mega-ski stations, we NEED to accelerate discussions and efforts regarding the future of our mountains. Those discussions should be opened to interdisciplinary experts and people, users of the mountains, future generations, etc. And I do believe that as designers we have to take place in those conversations. Those discussions can't go without mentionning the terrible news about part of mountains collapsing in the french alps one week ago in the Aiguille du Midi and in the Maurienne two days ago. Our 2024 Ski Report is out! The appetite for mountain living is at its peak. Ski resorts see their demand for chalets at its highest, but a tight supply is only available. Ski properties are selling on an Off-Market basis, showing high demand. Buyers have to prepare their finances and paperwork in advance to be in a position to move the quickest on the property of their choice. The French and Swiss Alpes have become more than a lifestyle. It has become a source of income and a significant investment. Luxury chalets increased by 4.4% within the last 12 months, and the Swiss resorts top the rankings for the second year (see graph attached). The 𝟏𝟏𝟏𝐭𝐡 𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐞 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 commences Saturday with its 𝐺𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐷é𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡 in Florence before heading into France a few days later. I love 𝐿𝑒 𝑇𝑜𝑢𝑟: the pageantry, spectacle, entertainment, athleticism, strategy, competition, personal stories, and the fact that—at our house—it often marks the beginning of summer. (NB: This year’s Tour starts earlier than unusual and ends in Nice due to Paris’ hosting of the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad in late July). I know many love and follow professional cycling and its grand tours. I’ve been reflecting a bit on how 𝐿𝑒 𝑇𝑜𝑢𝑟 provides potent analogies for all of us in our lives – personal and professional: 1. Like the yellow jersey (GC, or general classification) contenders, we must all 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐞𝐲𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬, even when setbacks and challenges occur. This may mean losing some stages in order to win the race. It also means we can’t become demoralized when we have an off day—we get back on the bike and keep pushing with the long-term goal in mind. 2. 𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦. While we often focus on individual winners and personalities in professional cycling, the sport’s winners—whether in a stage, a sprint, a mountain climb, or otherwise—only get there through the support, backing, strategy, and protection of their team. Whatever successes we may achieve, we achieve them because of the individuals by whom we are surrounded. We all rely on teammates to get us to the top of the hill or the front of the sprint, or to the finish line in Paris (or, this year, Nice). 3. There are 𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞. One of the most exciting things about a cycling grand tour is the races within the race. Of course, there’s the general classification overall leader (the maillot jaune, or yellow jersey), but each of the race’s 21(!) stages has a winner. Each stage also has intermediate competitions within it, including sprints, mountain ascents, the most aggressive rider, the fastest young rider, and the beloved 𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑛𝑒 𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑔𝑒. In any endeavor we undertake, there are significant intermediate pieces that we must focus on, excel at, and do our best with. And when we fall short (which we will), we try again tomorrow—with (see # 1) the big picture in mind. 4. Humans 𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫. Finally, watch the crowds at these stages. The fans are intense! They provide encouragement, adrenaline, cheering, enthusiasm, and support from the sidelines as these remarkable athletes perform herculean feats. I believe all humans are fighting their hardest to get to the top of their proverbial ascents in life. We would all do well to more genuinely and frequently cheer one another on with passion, love, and respect—to help each other complete our own personal stages, whatever those may be. Enjoy Le Tour! Hyogo ski resort reopens, but bleak outlook as warm weather to continue - https://lnkd.in/gmFZe7-m HYOGO, Jan 09 (News On Japan) - A ski resort in Kami Town, Hyogo Prefecture, has resumed operations after a five-day closure, and only 3 days after a 'snow begging' ritual was performed. The Hachi Kita Ski Resort in Kami Town, which opened in December, had to suspend its operations on Jan 4 due to a lack of snowfall. The onset of cold weather from Sunday allowed the resort to reopen on Monday. However, with temperatures expected to rise from Tuesday, and no snowfall forecast until around January 13, the ski resort faces another week of challenges. The snow prayer ceremony was held for the first time in 23 years, and may need to be repeated. 1. Tree wells are naturally occurring spaces between snow and tree branches that can trap skiers and snowboarders if they fall in, leading to suffocation or asphyxiation. 2. Cases of snow immersion suffocation (SIS) occur most often when a skier or snowboarder falls into a tree well and is unable to get out due to the deep, soft snow. 3. SIS is a particularly real risk in the Rocky Mountains due to climate change, which is causing warmer temperatures and deeper, softer, powdery snow. 4. SIS is a preventable risk and ski areas, organizations like Protect Our Winters, and individuals can all take steps to reduce the risk, such as staying with a buddy and wearing a beacon. 5.
