Food Security vs. Food Sovereignty: What’s the Difference? Food security and food sovereignty are distinct concepts in the realm of food systems, each addressing different aspects of food access and control. - Food Security ensures that everyone has consistent access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food. It focuses on large-scale food production, market stability, and industrial agriculture to provide food, especially in times of crisis. - Food Sovereignty empowers local communities to define their own food systems. It prioritises sustainability, small-scale farming, and cultural relevance, challenging corporate-driven food systems to create a more just and environmentally conscious world. At the core: Food Security = Access to food. Food Sovereignty = Control over food systems. In summary, while food security focuses on access to food, food sovereignty emphasises control over food systems and the right to produce food in a culturally appropriate and sustainable manner. #FoodSecurity #FoodSovereignty #Agroecology #SustainableFarming #FoodSystems #EnvironmentalJustice #FoodJustice #ResilientFoodSystems #SmallScaleFarming #EcologicalSustainability Partnership for African Social & Governance Research (PASGR) ALEX AKIDIVA Apollo Karuga, RD.

The current globalized agri-food system model is increasingly recognized as unsustainable, as it undermines environmental health, social equity, and food security, as well as local food cultures and economies (Lähde et al., 2023). There is growing consensus around the need for a radical transformation of agri-food systems to increase their sustainability and resilience (McGreevy et al., 2022). Alternative food networks (AFNs) can contribute to building sustainable, just, resilient and productive food systems by incorporating local, indigenous and innovative knowledge and bringing together a diversity of actors to connect food production and consumption and create new practices and relationships around food. Despite an increase of AFNs globally, however, they remain a niche, and scientific evidence of their performance is still limited. To address this gap, this Research Topic features 14 articles (see Table 1) that explore a broad range of AFNs, providing evidence from real-world case studies on their performance, operationalization, challenges, opportunities, and ultimately their potential for food system transformation. #foodsystem #foodsystems #alternativefoodsystems #foodsystemtransformation #sustainablefoodsystems #foodsecurity #foodequity #socialequity #foodjustice #foodsovereignty #resilience #resilientfoodsystems #indigenousknowledge #indigenousfoodsystems #foodpolicy #dietitians #nutritionists #nutricionistas

Creating new ways to diversify food protein production can help prevent future food crisis. 💡 Our industry is focused on finding new ways to produce food proteins that can help de-risk our food system by anticipating potential future shocks caused by climate or geopolitical crisis that can impact food production. We are committed to providing fermentation-enabled foods that require little land and water resources, minimise links in the supply chain, provide economic opportunities for farmers and meet the demand of European consumers. But we need to work together to overcome the current obstacles in changing how we produce and consume protein. We're excited to have collaborated on this New Food article discussing the interconnectedness of global food systems and the importance of collaborative, cross-sector solutions to strengthen food resilience. https://lnkd.in/dikAzh3x #Fermentation #ClimateChange #FoodSystems #FoodCrisis

Yesterday, Transitional Future was represented in the first day of the FOOD 2030 Networks Conference on Transformative Food System Innovation in Brussels (under the CLEVERFOOD project). The main sessions attended were 'Public engagement, multi-stakeholder collaboration and empowerment' (on Vertical Themes) and 'Shifting to healthier & more plant-based food production and consumption' Farm-to-Fork area (on Common Objectives). This is in line with the current positioning on exploring, understanding and engaging the different stakeholders in advancing and scaling Sustainable Food Networks for systemic transitions. The main💡takeaways (in our perspective): On 🤝collaboration: . systemic transitions are multi-layered and at different speeds; . not all stakeholders are represented at the discussion (and action) tables; . we need super-coordinators to help manage the barrage of initiatives, projects, access to information - particularly for funding purposes - and collaborative effort; . we need to arrange collaborations in a more effective way so that the different projects can work together, and know which ones could help out in a bi-directional way. For this, elimination of duplication of efforts and centralisation of (quality) data are essential to achieve this. On food 🤲access and 🎓education: . good, healthy food should be available and facilitated, and less nutritional food should have more barriers to entry; . retailers and food processors have significant influence and they must participate in shaping sustainable solutions; . a very low percentage of the population in The Netherlands (2%) has followed the national food guidelines. On 🏛policy level: . we need smarter approaches on shifting funding to more proactive perspectives on health and nutrition to avoid a health epidemic and tax surcharges for the future generations; . the EU is still very far from the actual reality and still sensitive to pressures from major players in the industries; . we need to band together to be closer and more effective on policy change, including fighting the discrimination in funding based on composition of ingredients (meat vs plant based origin) when it comes to processed vs unprocessed food (thanks to Rune-Christoffer Dragsdahl for pointing that out). There's still one more day to go, so be sure to participate as it includes rotating panels on: . What are the local, national and EU policies that we need for supporting transformative food system innovation? . How can the development of EU policies on food eco-labelling support transformative food system innovation? 🌍🌱Reflecting on an enlightening IFIAD Food Systems Governance Webinar This afternoon I had the privilege of attending a fascinating webinar hosted by IFIAD, featuring Jessica Duncan's insightful exploration of Food Systems Governance. As someone deeply intrigued by the dynamics of food systems, I found today's discussion particularly captivating. To be honest, the term "Food Systems Governance" was somewhat unfamiliar before this session. However, Jessica's expertise shed light on its importance and relevance in shaping our collective understanding of food systems and their potential transformation. One of the most interesting parts of the webinar was the discourse surrounding the shift from a narrower focus on food security, to a more holistic approach - food system transformation. But, as Jessica pointed out, this transformation idea unveils several profound questions, questioning the robustness of our understanding in this area. What are the normative goals of the transformation? What are the pathways to achieving these goals? Who benefits, and who is left behind? How do we ensure accountability and responsibility within our food systems? During the session, I posted a question to Jessica about the definition of a sustainable food system, a query that has been on my mind. Her response, while not definitive, raised important considerations. She emphasised the contextual nature of the definition, varying depending on the level of the food system being discussed – national, sub-national, or regional. Moreover, she highlighted the importance of questioning who holds the authority to define a sustainable food system, a point that really stood out to me. These inquiries prompted a critical reflection on the complexities involved in achieving sustainability within our food systems. At the end of the day, food is the foundation of life, so it cannot be overlooked! The need for clarity and consensus on the objectives of food system transformation became quite apparent, underscoring the perhaps needed urgency of collaborative action. Overall, the webinar left me with a renewed sense of purpose and heightened my commitment to contributing to the topic of sustainable food systems. I am eager to delve further into this vital field and explore avenues for meaningful engagement and impact. #IFIAD #foodsystems #sustainability #foodsystemsgovernance #climatechange #agriculture
