Our family adventure: Wild wonders at Addo Elephant Park
As our exploration of South Africa draws to a close, I’m compelled to share the enriching experiences from our concluding chapter at Addo Elephant Park. Over the span of four days, our family embarked on two distinct self-driving safaris each day - one capturing the serene beauty of sunrise at 5:30 AM, and another as the park whispered its goodnights at 6:30 PM. Each journey through the park offered a unique palette of emotions, filled with anticipation, wonder, and countless awe-inspiring moments.
Our encounters were as varied as they were profound, from the majesty of elephants and zebras to the playful antics of warthogs, the stealth of jackals, the elegance of kudus, the power of water buffaloes, the dance of birds, and the rare sight of rhinos. These experiences, both close and at a distance, not only marked a magnificent culmination to our trip but also reminded us of the vast beauty and diversity our world holds.
This adventure transcends the mere act of witnessing wildlife; it’s a vivid illustration of how stepping out of our comfort zones can lead to the most rewarding and transformative experiences.
In sharing our journey, i invite you to consider how the pursuit of personal dreams and visions can parallel our professional goals. The unpredictable beauty and lessons learned in Addo underscore the importance of embracing opportunities, nurturing curiosity, and the profound impact of real-world experiences on personal growth and leadership.
Let this serve as a catalyst for all of us: to not defer our dreams or sideline our ambitions. Inspired by the natural wonder and unexpected lessons of Addo, I encourage you to take the bold steps towards realizing your personal and professional dreams today.
The world is rich with opportunities for those willing to venture. Start now, and let your journey unfold.

Did you know that business website MarketWatch recently ranked Raleigh as the country's #1 dog-friendly city, with a score of 80 out of 100? This comes as no surprise to me, here are some of my favorite pet-friendly activities and attractions around the area!

At both Disney and Cedar Fair loyal guests often questioned changes to the parks. It seems that every ride or attraction we removed was someone’s favorite childhood memory.
Some of the changes were dictated by modern safety and accessibility standards. Some were removed because the cost to operate them was disproportionate to the ridership demand. And some were removed to make room for something determined to be bigger or better, often involving new technology.
Taking a step back, I believe there is what I call “genetic vacation behavior.” This is the desire to share what you did as a youth with the generations that came after you. This is why so many of the rides and attractions that are decades old are still very popular. Their secret is not in great technology nor is it in their genesis from animated films, as many have their own backstory. Their power is in the memories that were created as families and friends experienced them together. For the record, even fifty-five years later I believe my brothers and I can sing the Country Bear Jamboree chorus, “blood on the saddle and blood all around…”
When I was challenged by guests regarding such changes, I explained to them that we believed it was important to respect the history but not to revere it. I know Webster will disagree with my use of revere, but for me that implies more of a religious devotion. Admittedly, finding that balance can be difficult but the only thing that guarantees that these parks are still here in the future is that changes are in fact made.
It is hard not be impressed by a new muti-zillion dollar attraction or the speediest coaster on the planet. But to be honest, changes that require more imagination than dollars are higher my radar. The best creativity comes not from limitless boundaries. Brilliance comes from solving the puzzle that has borders. Soarin’ Over California is a famous example of just that. Ghost Town Alive at Knott’s Berry Farm is another.
So, changes will happen and that is mostly a good thing. I just hope the rumor is true about the Country Bear Jamboree!
When you start your own company, it's not often you get a chance to step back and reflect on it until later on in life.
Entrepreneurs take the leap for many different reasons. They've found an opportunity in their marketplace. They have a passion driving them to it. They want to be a boss and control their destiny. Money.
5 years ago, two of my best friends and I decided that it was time for us to make a change and for none of the reasons above. It was about relationships and a goal to shift to balance between our work and personal lives.
It starts off sounding like the opening line to a joke. A Civil Engineer/Project Manager, a Product Marketer and a Digital Marketer walk into a conference room...
We had worked for another company, sharing an 8x8 office for over 5 years and LOVED working together. We all brought different perspectives from our past lives and challenged each other to think differently. We worked on the same projects and clients together helping them navigate through their own business challenges. We loved it.
The average person will work over 90,000 hours in their lifetime. That is 1/3 of their entire lives. That's about the same amount of time that someone sleeps. It's an incredible (good or bad) way to look at how much time we spend here.
Working together for those years, we realized that rarely do you get a chance to pick who you want to work with in your life. The three of us knew, if it was going to happen, this was our chance to do it.
We wanted to work with clients (and specifically, the PEOPLE who work for those clients) that was equally important. Having our work days filled between working with friends and clients you trust and truly enjoy supporting while providing fulfilling work for 9 hours a day? That was it.
We thought it would be just the three of us at Strand for a long time - and we were perfectly content with that.
A year later, we hired our first employee Erin Williams - and what a hire that was. 4 years later, there are now 25 of us and we are still growing.
These 5 years (albeit 2 COVID years) have gone by in a blur.
I love the people we get to do it with. I love the work we get to do. I love the balance we've been able to provide ourselves to start, build and grow our individual families outside of the workplace.
I want to thank Ethan Wright and Jocelyn (Hein) Uhls for taking the leap with me. I want to thank our clients for taking the leap with us as well and allowing us to support you and your own business objectives and goals. And I want to thank the team here at Strand Marketing for giving us (at least a portion of) your work life every day.
I think we've said this every year, but 5 years in and we're still only getting started.
Today marks five years of Strand's journey. From humble beginnings, we've grown exponentially, winning prestigious awards and expanding our business reach. It's a journey marked by the collective efforts of an exceptional team, whose resilience and creativity have fueled our success. As we celebrate this milestone, we extend our deepest gratitude to our clients, partners, and supporters for their trust and belief in our vision. We look forward to the future, where we'll continue to push boundaries, innovate, and make a difference in our industry and beyond. Cheers to five incredible years and the opportunities that lie ahead!

What we're thinking about now: Third Placemaking.
As you know, we've been thinking about Third Places for a long time. And we're expert placemakers. But now, a new generation craves places outside of home and work to enrich their lives and combat loneliness. That means intentional gathering spaces. That means the types of retailers and restaurants where you become a regular. That means event programming every single week.
We look forward to sharing more soon. #ThirdPlacemaking
