The first day of #ChronFest was engaging and evocative, with many smart, thoughtful, and straightforward panelists. If you did not get a chance to listen in, here are a few takeaways from my notes: ▫ Access and Equity: Diversity and inclusion don't begin and end with an acceptance letter and generous financial aid package. As we increase access, we are deepening the inequalities on campus. We must do more to decode higher education for our students, distribute high-impact opportunities equally, and celebrate skill sets developed through the real-world experiences and unpaid labor that underrepresented students learn outside campus walls. ▫ Student Outcomes vs. Market Expectations: Are the students and credentials our higher education system producing really matching the expectations of the larger world? ▫ Innovation: There was a time when the wealthiest and most elite institutions led innovation, but now our best and boldest ideas come from scrappier institutions. There was a suggestion that the elites have turned their backs on the rest of higher education as they've moved away from addressing broader educational challenges. ▫ Biodervisty to the College Ecosystem: It's time to shift our perspective. We've compared our colleges and universities on a vertical system for too long. The talks challenged us to redefine 'college' as education and post-secondary training and to recognize all colleges equally, without elitism. Each type and market provides a layer of biodiversity to our ecosystem of higher education. While access is indeed expanding, inequalities persist. However, by working together, innovating together, and recognizing the strength of a biodiverse system of higher education, we can significantly impact the future of post-secondary education. Introducing The Revel Institute Summer camp: Castle Cary | August 12-16 | aspiring young people aged 16+ "Life is better when we play". Getting into sport for a love of it (rather than the seriousness of competition or getting fit) makes us want to do it more. It’s the same for those us involved in creative business, where ideas flow naturally when the process is full of joy. We believe that culture needs more play, all round. In the transition into the adult work world, young people find themselves at a crossroads. If you're a parent, you'll likely be thinking about how to guide them in this. That's why The Revel Institute (TRI) wanted to share the pleasures of working in a creative business with young people from communities in Castle Cary and surounding areas- fuelling their imaginations and firing them up with possibilities that could lie ahead of them. This is the thinking that has driven the No More Parachutes team to partner up with TRI to help mentor young people this summer - hopefully helping to generate a positive impact that ripples through our community, born from the spirit of the pleasure of playing. Meet our team! Austin Konkle (he/him), our Marketing Manager, is the newest member of the Lex team, wearing every marketing hat in the basket. From growth, to social, to events, and everything in between, Austin makes sure you all *know* who Lex is and what we stand for. Fun fact: he has had his own little moment in the spotlight as a TikTok creator. * Q&A with Austin * Q: What's the most favorite thing that you've worked on at Lex? A: We just launched our Lex Campus Ambassador Program with student ambassadors across North America at over 60 universities! It’s so exciting to see GenZ users far and wide who want to grow their local queer community on our platform. Q: What's your favorite way to use Lex or something you discovered because of Lex? A: I love the Group Explore feature! I find myself going through various categories all the time just to see queer people around the world finding each other and bonding over shared interests. Q: Biggest lesson you learned this year? (Personal or work related!) A: Don’t count yourself out of something before even giving it a shot! There’s a lot of opportunities for Lex and some can seem scary, too ambitious, or like big undertakings, but we’re a small, capable team that’s already proved out so much while being so scrappy. Q: A book/podcast/TV show/movie you would recommend? A: I'm waiting on the edge of my seat for Severance Season 2!
